Funniest vinyl or 78 record you own.

Just a nonsense topic, besides Prince I collect a lot of other vinyl records and have a range stretchinmg from a 1 sided 1909 78 record up to 90s material. I have a lot of ancient 78s that play very old time music. Some date back to the 1910s and 1920s.

.

The funniest I own are a 1951 78 of Rosemary Clooney and Marlena Detrip, it has the songs "Good for nothin" and "Too old to cut the mustard" which are hilarious with a farfisa style organ and camp singing like a drag queenage. The lines include the following "Said he was an army, ready to kill and the uniform he wore at a Bunkahill" referring to the 1775 battle, meaning this man would be 190 years old in 1951 at least.

.

Of the 45's I have a Coral record from 1958 which includes the gems Sugartime and Banana Split by the Maguire Sisters, who were clearly some Andrews sisters rip off. Both songs are too sugary by half and its like a frothy bubblegum pop song from the 1950s, with lines like "Give me sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at suppertime, be my little sugar and love me all the time" I mean really - all night sex marathons in the 1950s.

.

Another is a very racist record called Running bear by Johnny Preston, this thing looks medjaeval but dates from 1959/60 and is about two Indians (Feathers type, not telephone scammer type) in love with each other, and they commit suciide to be together.

.

Anyone else have funny old records?

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

That would have to be Twee motten (two moths) by Dorus who was well known as a comedian in Holland in the 1950s. He sings a song about two moths in his coat, he even gives them names (Bas and Charlotte because that rhymes with moths in Dutch). And it has the same organ sound you talk about.

I have a bunch of Millie Jackson because she cracks me up. lol

Patti Austin's 1992 Live CD has this very funny bit:

And I have proper comedy records by LaWanda, Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx, but since this is the music forum, I thought of those two above.

I am allowing 45s and 33s too, that is what a vinyl record is guys.

.

78s were made out of shellac, not vinyl (Well some 50s ones were), but 78s of heavy shellac are much more heavy and fragile than vinyl.

.

Some of my original records like Running Bear and Sugartime are 45 vinyls.

.

Too old to cut the mustard was the 78.

I remember having an old 45 of this song as a little kid and thinking it was pretty darn funny back then (kids find anything funny!) lol

And it was a #1 smash in 1963, just before the Beatles landed and people forgot about schmaltz like this overnight. It was by Jewish perfromer Allan Sherman who had quite a career with self deprecating songs like this.

.

Family guy lampooned it "Records don't just get up and walk away, except my old Allan Sherman record - Don't get angry because you don't play me anymore, theres a lot of old Jews who still get a kick out of Hello Mudda, Hello Faddah - oy its warm out today, I don't need this coat"
