George Michael - Rate The Albums

This is a tough one, as they're all so layered and perfect on their own. GM only released five studio albums in his solo career, four of which were original material and one was a cover album. There were Wham's 3 records (one of them had different versions for the UK, US, and Japan, so it could be seen as 4.)

There were EPs, etc, but I'm sticking to just the five studio records. Here is my order:

  1. Older
  2. Faith
  3. Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1.
  4. Patience
  5. Songs From The Last Century

There's an interesting duality of Patience. There are really two different kinds of songs on there, so it's quite different in that regard. Older is a bereavement album, and the one where he basically came out to fans (in song and in the album dedication). LWP is sort of his ATWIAD, in that he was putting what made him most famous behind him and going in a 180º direction in many ways.

I think TwentyFive was his best compilation set.

What say you with the five studio albums?

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Let's be honest, he came out to fans on "Cowboys and Angels."

Perhaps, to some degree, it could have been construed that way. It was about a 3-way relationship where he was in love with another man, and a woman was in love with him (GM). However, GM himself said that he felt he really came out to the fans on the dedication on Older. "to Anselmo Feleppa, who changed the way I look at my life".

It's odd that so many people thought he was gay well before any of that. Was it his pretty boy good looks? He wasn't exactly flaunting around like Freddy Mercury or Andy Bell did. He wasn't in drag like Boy George. Sometimes when a good looking guy comes along, I think the LGBT community just projects their hopes that the person is gay. But with GM, it ended up being true.

Either way, Older seems to be his most personal album, followed by LWP, then Patience.

The song isn't subtle enough to be misconstrued.

"I know you think that you're safe, mister,
Harmless deception that keeps love at bay
It's the ones who resist
That we most want to kiss
Wouldn't you say?"

"You can call it love,
But I don't think it's true,
You should know by now,
I'm not the boy for you"

Add in the deliberate use of the words "mister" and "sister" in the two verses and...well, I'll just say it should've been obvious to anyone who was willing to accept it. "Freedom 90" has a certain subtlety due to its anthemic qualities—although "there's something deep inside of me, there's someone else I've got to be" was always stretching it—but "Cowboys and Angels" is about as in-your-face as it gets coming from someone consistently surrounded by those rumors.

Yeah, I like them all but I'd definitely agree with your ranking.
