Check the stage photo back of Bar-Kays Too Hot to Stop album, looks like they had a wicked show back then - but how can we see it? I know they were in Wattstax, but not in their mid to late 1970s funk prime, which again is as the Red Hot Chili Peppers would say, a funky crime!

I was planning on writing on this exact same same topic one day but I keep putting it off.

I cant believe that there is no videos of the Ohio players in their prime or any of the other groups from the 70's. It is crazy. It's not like there were no video recorders during this time. I would have loved to see some of the "in studio video". Where is any video of a Switch concert Barkays, Cameo etc.

I have to believe that some family members some where must have rare video footage.

They are doing much better than most white groups from the same time. Where is Bread and Starbuck?

Soul / Funk/ RB/ Rock band footage. At that sadly a lot of bands/ singers didn't do what the Eagles did.... hire someone to record them pretty much all the time.

Seems like this stuff was only filmed if it was part of a television special or variety show. I suppose the home video market didn't really blow until the eighties.

LOVE ME some Fatback! I got their last 10 CD's from 1980 to the end. Amazing FUNK; especially the "Tasty Jam" CD from '81! My #1!

a young AL McKay played some killer guitar in both those bands b4 joining Earth Wind & Fire... im heavily into both those bands catalogs..

Sun was tight as hell. I liked the original lineup a little better with Chris Jones on lead vocals

than the new lineup that started with the Sunburn album although Sunburn and Sunpower

are equally great albums. Byron Byrd held it down. Part of the original lineup later formed Dayton.

I like Dream On and Wanna Make Love from their debut album.

Unless they were some really popular stadium rock band like Pink Floyd, Eagles, or Led Zeppelin that made a lot of money, I would guess many of these acts didn't have enough money to hire a film crew to lug around. Many of them didn't sell a lot of albums unless they managed to crossover to pop Top 40 like Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang (JT era), or Commodores. A few like War & Ohio Players got some rock station airplay. So the labels weren't likely to pay for a film crew. I don't think there was that much of an audience for filmed concerts in general in the 1960s & 1970s ( live albums were kinda popular though). Few, if any were shown on TV. There were variety show specials filmed for the 3 TV networks (ig. Chicago, Natalie Cole, Carpenters, Temptations & Supremes, Jackson 5, Osmonds, etc). Those usually had comedy skits and not just music only. The networks were known to tape over music programs to save money, especially pre-1970s. They didn't think the shows had any rerun value. A lot of American Bandstand episodes were lost in this way. There were some R&B concerts with multiple acts that were filmed like Wattstax, Save The Children, Soul To Soul, Harlem Cultural Festival, Rumble In The Jungle, etc. In the case of Wattstax, only a small portion of the concert that was filmed made it to the movie and it had some portions that were people in the neighborhood & Richard Pryor talking about different things.

My mom said they went to her school in the Bronx. of course...no footage of that as big as they were. That's with many back in the day though. if you were not on some documentary segment or TV show may have been out of luck unless the management bought taping footage to bring at the concert.

Same here-the OP's expecting way too much.

Another reason is that most of the artists the OP likes that they mentioned didn't appear on something like Soul Train or any local variety TV show in the USA.
