Happy to see Mark Adams get some love! He's the tipping point in my Slave vs Cameo argument. Cameo has quite a bit more hits, but Mark gave Slave that "down and dirty" sound that I love! .

No James Jamerson? | |

1. James Jamerson (Motown) 2. Verdine White 3. Mark Adams (Slave) 4. Bootsy Collins 5. Mononeon (only reason he isnt higher, is because he's new) 6. Bernard Edwards (Chic) 7. Larry Graham
i know he's gifted, but im not really into Jaco Pastorious

i LOVE both those bands, but Cameo is not on Slave's level...hell no...
Cameo may have had a few more radio hits, but Slave's albums were MUCH better...
and the talents of Steve Arrington and Mark Adams are unmatched by ANYONE in Cameo...

There was a Slave vs Cameo thread on here once, I was one of only a few that chose Slave! Like you said Slave didn't have the radio hits, but their albums were hot!

Also dig Marvin Isley and Marcus Miller. If you've got funk, you've got style.

Louis Johnson is number 1 in my book. He took Larry Graham's slap style (whom developed it into an art form)and turned it into an institution and he owned it. You can hear the thumping and plucking on all the Brothers Johnson records and a lot of Quincy Jones produced stuff. Don't know if I seen or heard anyone attack the bass like Loius. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Victor Wooten kicks all of their asses! The guy's rhythmic sense and subtlety is impeccable.

The guy's rhythmic sense and subtlety is impeccable. i had seen his name before, but never checked out his work until this week...he's definitely super talented, but in all the clips i see, he always seems like he's doing too much...lots of showy acrobatic slapping and plucking and rumbling...ive never seen him fall into a deep pocket and stay there (not saying he cant or doesnt, just havent witnessed it), like i hear it with rhythm masters like Marcus Miller, Bootsy, or Verdine White...even Mononeon has a busy playing style, but he still keeps the pocket clean and funky...

I just last week discovered a band called Vulfpeck and the bass player is one of the best I've ever heard.
