Can't. Pick. Just. One. So, I'll close my eyes and pull one out of my hat. The Mothership Connection! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Tough call as I have not nor will not ever hear all the funk albums out there. But from what I've heard thus far I'd have to go with James' Payback LP. Just Funk personified with a capital F. Bootsy has always said funk is making something out of nothing, and that is what this albums concept and music is all about. Just gut bucket groove from start to finish. A loose, sprawling affair that just squeezes and oozes forth with rhythms leaking all off the sides of it like a juicy gourmet cheeseburger.
P-Funk's Mothership Connection chimes in at a close second for me. This one a much "tighter" collection of songs and a slicker musical and conceptual statement. [Edited 1/7/17 15:37pm]

For me, Innervisions by Stevie based solely on three songs; Living For The City, Higher Ground, and Jesus Children of America.

Too damn hard to choose but definitely one of the Rick James albums, either "Street Songs" or "Throwin' Down". Andy is a four letter word.

Can't go wrong with Funkentelechy either. Listening to it now... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I agree with all of the above. I have to add Weapon of Choice too although they are not well known:

Hard to disagree but there are several others I would put among my top 20 including these 2 albums. I'd actually put Bustin Out of L Seven in there too as it is my favorite Rick album. Don't laugh at my funk

Haven't heard every funk album but Id take a guess it's gotta be something by George Clinton/Parliament
That's not a dis to any of the other funksters but when I hear a Parliament song it's that true stank funk. [Edited 1/10/17 8:36am]
