I saw the performance and none of it reminded me of Prince whatsoever, so I'm not sure where that is coming from. As for his voice, he actually sounded a bit nervous in the beginning but tried to clean it up near the end, but I don't think he was terrible. He needs a little work but I can respect his effort. He actually performed with both no shirt and no shoes on. I'm kind of amazed at how people are going in on his "flabbly" look...actually he looks like a normal guy. If he'd been built like "The Rock" or in some kind of overdosed steriod look with veins popping everywhere, would that had suited him better? disbelief

Nah, he just sucked. lol

Oddly enough I was watching Chance The Rapper on SNL the other night and even though I don't know or care anything about him I was able to laugh with his corny ass instead of at him like I did with Childish Gambino.

I just started laughing at Gambino and still haven't stopped...go figure?

This song is a rip off directly of" I would rather be with you " by Bootsy Collins, He cannot sing for shit and has no stage presence. Bruno has a decent voice and stage presence.

Watched Jimmy Fallon last night. Not a bad episode. Musical guest was Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino. I heard and didn't like his old stuff, but someone told me to listen to his new material, that he had gone in a new R&B funk direction. Haven't had a chance to listen to the record, but I did see this performance on Fallon last night.

I'm eager to hear what y'all thought, but, man, was that terrible. Shameless unoriginal ripoff of Prince and TTD with no stage presence and a voice going all over the place, off key, out of tune and bizarre intonations. Didn't care for it, don't really get the "rave reviews." Someone's gotta fill me in.

This post is unfair to Childish Gambino. Why are we criticizing him for aligning himself with a
rich and storied legacy in Black American art?

Think about it: Prince could be said to be aping James Brown and George Clinton when it came to
his live shows too.

All this board does is hate on people not named Prince or Michael Jackson!

Compare this performance to a Prince live show, even in Prince's early days with James Brown moves, and if you dont see a difference I cant help you.

This was a bad performance and his voice sound stupid. No way around this.

You're missing the point as I am not qualitatively judging Childish Gambino's performance here. In-
stead, the claim is that he's shamelessly ripping off Prince who could be accused of shamelessly rip-
ping off his own predecessors.

wow. okay.

.

anyone who digs &/or appreciates this person called "Childish Gambino" - ok, alright that's your/their choice. nothing more to say.

.

watching this performance on Fallon -

I made myself watch it to the bitter end, just so I wouldn't need to watch it again -

it just confirms to me HOW FAR DOWN standards of good music - even good "popular" music - are today (yes, I give "Gambino" minimal credit for at least attempting to sing & not "rap-sing" like some/many do..)

.

it's laughable to compare this "Gambino" to any artist who can actually sing - much less compare Gambino to a multi-octave vocal master like Prince. Gambino would have to dedicate the rest of his natural life - 100% of it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week & 365 days a year - to even begin to approach what any real singer can actually do. even Bootsy (& yes, I hear a slight.. similarity to "I'd rather be with you" at the beginning of Gambino's performance) is & has always been known as a world-class bass player 1st, with sufficient "musical-vocalizing" talent. I'd even say that Bootsy is a better singer than this Gambino..

.

no, I am not "hating" - call this a "generational thing" if you want. I understand that some people would rather listen to "anything" rather than nothing..

.

I am simply spoiled. I grew up on the amazing artistry, vocal mastery & musical genious of the following (& this is just the "short list" off the top of my head):

.

Sly Stone

ARETHA FRANKLIN

STEVIE WONDER

JAMES BROWN

Marvin Gaye

Gladys Knight

Ohio Players

Isley Brothers

Al Green

Chaka Khan

Jackson 5

Michael Jackson

Earth Wind & Fire

Rick James

PRINCE

Teena Marie

Debarge

LUTHER VANDROSS

Sade

.

growing up on music like this, it's simply not possible for me to

LOWER MY STANDARDS

& say "oh (insert flavor of the month here)'s song is great!)

when in most cases it's just an indistinguishable re-hash of whatever else someone (with no real musical discernment) thinks is "hot"

.

1 of the rare, few artists of the last 20 years I'd put near those ALL-TIME MASTERS above is..

D'Angelo.

.

in the last 10 years or so, John Legend is 1 of the better, actual singer/musicians around.

of course, in the 1970s John Legend wouldn't be allowed on the same stage with any of the above All-Time Masters. for today - the end of 2016 - John Legend is better than most. Bruno Mars has his moments, Adele can sing, a handful of others too..

.

but me, I simply cannot - I simply will not "go along" with this overabundance of MEDIOCRITY that passes for "today's popular music".

excuse me while I go back to listening to some

real

My point is that I'm sure whoever accused Prince of ripping off aspects of James Brown also gave Prince props for his talent, performance and making his own sound. It's worse when you borrow and can't perform live.

I personally don't find Bruno original but damn the guy can perform his butt off, with live real music.

He's no Prince (most people aren't), but I really like this album. Boogie man, Redbone,Me & Your Mama and Zombies are my favorites.

If he's serious about this direction of his music he has to put in the work, like Prince, to get his skills to the point where people won't think of him as an actor trying to do funk music, but as an artist that plays funk music.

I hope he is serious.....

Think what you will of the performance but ain't nothing Prince-like about it. Ooooh... he performed with his shirt off! He sang in a falsetto! He's such a shameless Prince biter!

Prince is far from the only person or even the first person in history to do those things. This comparison failed the moment it was made.
