Common - Black America Again Has anyone copped the new Common album? I love it. Surprised no one has bought it up yet. It was released Nov. 4. It's almost like Like Water For Chocolate pt 2.

I've heard the snippets and while the content is exactly what's needed right now, I wasn't completely feeling the album, however, I haven't given up on it yet. I do consider his "Like Water for Chocolate" album to be his best to date and still rock with that cd to this very day. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I own all of his albums, most of the remixes/instrumentals etc
Love Star is beautiful, (and I'm no prude to 'curse' words) but I think FUCK & NI&&A in this song limits it...

Someone randomly mentioned this one to me on yesterday. I forgot that it was out but I'm going to cop it later today- Nobody's Smiling was (in my humble opinion) a masterpiece on par with his earlier classics. I'll get back to this thread with my initial thoughts later...

I've given it a couple of listens. Very solid album. Black America Again is the Common i've grown to love over the years. His best song in probably a decade.

It's interesting that 2 of my favorite rappers use the N word a lot in their songs. Although I don't particularly care for it I do love their creativity and abstract verses. I have all of Common's albums from Like Water For Chocolate On. The only dud was Univesal Mind Control imo. I have to get One Day It Will All Make Sense. Don't laugh at my funk

even though musically, this album is not on par with prior efforts, but after listening to the whole lp a few times, its clear that Common is hellbent on trying to make more of a spiritual connection lyrically, with his listeners...something that had been missing from Commons music on his last few albums

Common is a "fake Afro centric" and after that mess he did to Ledisi I don't take him seriously. When a rapper tries to brand themself as a righteous pro Black centric I take that to heart, he has shown himself time and time again, he is a fraud. His music is bittersweet because of it, this coming from someone who use to be a big Common fan. [Edited 11/18/16 19:34pm]

I like a few Commons songs. I may check it out. . Sometimes It's good to just put on an album 3 or 4 times after the first listen and just let it play uninterrupted. I see he's got my boy Bilal doing vocals. He's about due to drop something new I hope.

It was partially his fault (he wasnt the only one at fault though, him and John Legend are trash). They should have said no when Beyonce asked them to sing Ledisi's song which means they are just as wrong. They should have asked their co star if it was okay for a outsider person that was not associated with the Selma movie or song to sing her vocal parts. I personally would have STILL said no or at the very least championed for Ledisi to be apart of it, since it was her song that she sung in the movie.

I doubt Common or Legend have that type of power at the Grammy's but yeah, Ledisi should have sang it.

Beyonce first approached Common and John Legend and asked them if she could sing Ledisi's song from Selma since they were apart of the movie. They should have said no. John Legend said, "no one says no to Beyonce", Ledisi got screwed over big time. I lost a lot of respect for Common after that. He should have championed for Ledisi (especially since he himself is a non commercial rapper and understands the struggle). So his whole Black people need to help each other premis is bullshit especially since that is not something he is practicing himself. [Edited 11/20/16 16:18pm]

Commons music has always been bland to me. He's like the embodiment of that hotep Erkah Badu-ish street poetry back to nature/Africa person. With that said after to pimp a butterfly this album is meh. Good intentions and perspectives but excuted meh.

Beyonce isn't white, she is just the bigger ratings draw. He's a sellout for letting Beyonce sing now?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I agree. I'm not sure what the Beyonce Grammy fiasco a year ago has to do with Common being a sellout. Common has been a pro black rapper from day 1 but Common like most rappers allowed himself to grow like acting and being an activist. The whole Ledisi-Beyonce issue of a year ago is old news now. Ledisi admittedly didn't get it but she handled it with grace and even was cool with Beyonce doing her own version. I don't care for Beyonce's music either but must we have a damn thread everyday ripping her to shreds. Common neither John Legend were obligated to cause strife on the Grammy show when it was practically the Grammy's decision to let Beyonce perform. As for Common being fake and a sellout I have to call total bullshit on that especially if you only listen to Common casually or if at all . His previous album of 2 years ago Nobody's Smiling was an ode to the streets of Chicago and to bring awareness to a huge problem in America of police brutality against blacks. Also Common reached out to unknown rappers from Chicago to give them some shine on his album and I would hardly call that selling out. Common has yet to go Macklemore. Don't laugh at my funk

He is definitly a sell out.

I've never heard that from Common. There are a few folk out there that will complain about stuff when it isn't warranted. My guess is that where Common may have been coming from. For instance if your ass didn't vote you have no reason to gripe about the results of the election or out in the streets protesting. Don't laugh at my funk
