George Clinton on New Solo Work, P-Funk Project

Funk legend George Clinton recently served as a guest on The Talkhouse, where he discussed the aesthetics of Parliament–Funkadelic, as well as discussed his future projects, one of which will be a solo endeavor produced by Flying Lotus.

“When the mothership landed we had to have costumes that matched the spaceship,” Clinton said. “So we had leather suits, $10,000 coats — we had to look like we were pimps from outer space.”

The interview then transitions into Clinton’s forthcoming works, where he clarifies that along with his solo album there will be a Parliament album too.

I hope it doesn't take too long to materialise. It's been a while since he's done a solo album of original songs. The Gangsters of Love album was alright but I want new P Funk.

I have to admit,I think the last Funkadelic album,Ya Gotta Shake The Gate was a mess.Hopefully the new Parliament album will be a return to form.

It was! lol But, in my opinion, there is an album's worth of good songs on that collection.

We'll see what happens. He spouts off all matter of stuff from time to time. Never believe any of it until you are holding the actual CD, lol.

He has been known to work on a single record for decades, no joke. He has been leaking snippets of the Parliament record Medicaid Fraud Dog out on periscope for at least a couple of years now. It's got some incredible music on it. Whether and/or when it will actually see the light of day is anybody's guess.

What I've heard so far is funkier than Gate. But Gate has its moments. Go back and revisit it. Like all funk it might hit you differently after a time out.

Yeah, Shake The Gate is like Emancipation in that way. It's just so much to absorb as a single album, but there is a lot to like. I'm a big fan of this approach for artists like Prince & P-Funk. I'll take quantity and decide for myself what is quality! wink

More than anything I was shocked when The Prime Minister of Funk cut his Locs...It took me a minute to recognize him...He looked more like my Uncle Gary than Dr. Funkenstein...

I wouldn't compare it to Emancipation at all. There's just so much stuff performed by rappers with barely any input by known Funkadelic members on it that it's almost like a compilation album. The stuff on it also comes from various different sessions that took place over the years. It's resulted in many of the tracks sounding completely different from the others, whereas Emancipation has a rather consistent overall sound despite the different styles on it.

I'd rather compare it to Prince's New Power Pak release that had NPS, Come 2 My House and GCS2000 on it. wink

I know right. I'm not so sure if it was a matter of choice or necessity, as I believe it started falling out lol. He went back to the Parliaments finger waves at first now it's completely bald.

Gate is a record that has been coming together for decades. He was doing Ain't That Funkin in some of those early 90's gigs. The Parliament material he's producing now has a freshness to it that wasn't as evident on Gate.

Like I say don't hold your breath for Medicaid Fraud Dog. If you have periscope you can go in there and follow him. He plays all sorts of excerpts from it on there. He will come on there from the studio with Bone and P-Nut putting the "finishing touches" on it. But this has been going on for 2 years already lol.
