I watched some of it and wasn't that impressed by the awards show, however, there were a few performances that I did enjoy, most notably the Teddy Riley tribute. It was very befitting to have Tito up there, helping Teddy pay homage to his brother with the "Remember The Time" video playing in the background, it was well done. It was also exciting to see Aaron and Damian Hall join Teddy on stage for a Guy reunion....I've always loved Aaron Hall, however, he seems to be noticably thin...though he did still sound great and dressed to impress as always. Hope he isn't sick or anything. I love Anderson Paak and Ro James. Jill Scott's style is always on point. As for the "Soul Cypher", it was pretty good, Gladys Knight killed!!! But I still love last year's Soul Cypher better.

As for the bad, will somebody please tell Bobby Brown that he needs to retire from singing and performing. Half singing out of breath on stage is not appealing. He was absolutely terrible. So Keith Sweat was unavailable to perform on the Teddy Riley tribute? His presence sure would've made my night. I never thought that there would be a slimmer and more ghetto version of a Nikki Minaj type but somehow, we have Teyana Taylor to thank for that. SMH. Lastly, it's annoying when they showcase new artists, yet cut off their performances and go to commercial. Really? I love Erykah Badu and love to see her perform, however, it's ok to go with a different host next year.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Aaaron Hall sings just as good if not better than R. Kelly...You think the only reason R. kelly went further into Mega-success is becuz he's a Gifted writer?

Gladys Knight is a treasure, such a beautiful presence. Still one of the top live performers.

It was cool, but it really didn't feel like an award show to me, not in the same way that like the Grammy's or BET Awards does. There was too much emphasis on the old. And I don't have an issue with that, but it felt more like a retrospective, or a musical tribute show, more than it did an actual award show. Award shows generally exist more in the present. There weren't many full performances (I'm remembering 4 off the top of my head, not counting the soul cypher, brandy and teddy riley performances). Carl Thomas performed which felt really random, he wasn't being honored or anythting and he doesn't have out new music. He was just there.

Two of those performances featured the host which didn't feel right. Even when they gave out the awards it didn't feel like that's where the focus was.

Soul Train Awards are a low level award show. You're not gonna see the star power of a Grammys, AMA, BET or MTV Awards.

Thats not true. Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson all attended and performed on SOUL TRAIN back in the day. TODAY's Black pop stars are obnoxious and self absorbed and feel they are too big for Soul Train and that is what is sad because the Soul Train awards is the best award show on television imo.

And he also did Johnny Kemp, Heavy D and Hi-Five (Tony Thompson) who have all passed away in the past ffew years who Teddy did records for.

Also, No BLACKstreet songs, but that's for another thread I guess, lol.

I heard that Dave Hollister was pissed off ranted on twitter about one of the members not giving a clearance for Teddy to sing a Blackstreet song.

Thats some bullshit! SMH. Greedy ass people. i was figuring that would be the last song but who cares, Bobby Brown presence saved the day anyway.

I agree. It's time for this guy to stop embarassing himself. His voice is shot.I saw him on another awards show (last year?) participating in a tribute to Babyface. He came out and tried to sing "Roni" but he sounded like crap.

See, for me it's not about "star power" as much as it's about the fact that it just wasn't current. Not seeing [insert big name star here] perform wasn't a problem. Award shows, in the present tense, generally feature current acts - whether they are "stars or not" is debateable. Current acts perform and receive awards for their current projects. I appreciate that the Soul Train awards gave some shine to black artists other than Drake, Nikki, Rihanna and Beyonce. I liked seeing lesser known acts perform (it woulda been nice to see their whole performance though). HOWEVER, my point was that it just didn't feel like an award show. It felt like a retrospective or a tribute show. Which is totaly fine, but then let it be that. Don't turn the Soul Train AWARDS into the ultimate 90s tour, just do the damn ultimate 90s! Lol

Yeah. Co-sign. Bobby needs to get with whoever Whitney was working with. Because her voice was shot to hell too. He may still be able to save what's left of his voice but he really needs to work at it. And get in shape. That's probably a larger part of the problem.

That might just be who they can only get to perform. Dru Hill and Eric Bennet. I mean they're giving lifetime awards to Brandy (no offense as I like Brandy actually love. Had a crush on her since Thea.)

I do notice they get the current hot performer before their way up. I remember Miguel performing a few years ago before he blew up. Anderson.Paak looks to be on the upscale also.

This is true, which I can appreciate them doing, however, I agree with someone else who mentioned that some of the performances didn't fit with the show...or perhaps, it appeared to be out of place. For instance (I was flipping back and forth between this and The Walking Dead) at one point I saw Erykah Badu performing with some guy on the couch. They both sounded great, but it seemed as if they were doing a freestyle, singing performance? Next thing I know, Erykah crosses her legs on the couch and the guy is moving in on her while they are both singing and I'm like, huh? LOL. What is this performance supposed to be about? I was confused. Then she appeared on stage singing a song with India Arie. Again, both sounded flawless together, but I was wondering what the point was...was this a flashback part of the show? The focus was off. I do know that they try to bring back long forgotten R&B acts from the past to perform, however, I felt like this year's show included a bunch of fillers...as if there were actual bookings but for some reason, artists may have pulled out and they got Erykah and whoever was available to perform in that spot.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Why oh why does Beyonce win sooo many awards? She is overrated. Considering that Vanity appeared on Soul Train a number of times in the eighties, I felt that there shoud have been a video tribute to her.

Aaron Hall was better in his prime. In fact R.Kelly whether he wants to admit or not modeled his

style after Aaron Hall but Kelly had more drive. It seems personal problems derailed Aaron's career most notably the drama with his baby mama who was a model(can't remember her name) and drugs.
