Why doesn't Madonna like her first album ('MADONNA')?

I have heard over the years that she was not happy with how her debut album turned out.

Anyone know why?!?

She wasn't happy with Reggie LUcas' production mainly, that's why she brought in Jellybean to remix a lot of the tracks. She's performed at least one track from Madonna on every tour and even did 'Borderline' on Jimmy Fallon so she's obviously softened her opinion on the album over the years.

That's too bad for her if it's true as the first album is hit after hit (except Think Of Me and I Know It). I wonder if her views have changed on a lot of the earlier efforts as the years have passed, Physical Attraction is one funky tune. It was a natural progression to working with Nile. I like this album more than Like A Virgin as its more of a tight set then a diverse group of different genre tunes.

Madonna always criticizes her early material biggrin a few years ago,she referred to "Into The Groove" as a 'retarded song' disbelief lol I think she probably prefers the songs that came later in her career....the songs that are more 'serious',more personal and introspective.

That may have been true at one time. But in recent years, she has embraced the older stuff and played more of it live. The RH tour had mostly 80's hits as far as her older material. In fact, too much of it for me, I'd rather hear more of her 90's hits and later. I'm still waiting to hear Rain live!

From what I read.

.

1. She did not like the production (Already mentioned)

.

2. She had recorded Virgin in early 1984 and wanted it out earlier than it came out, she knew Virgin would be an epic and a classic record.

.

3. The fact that the first album, was not a cohesive project, just a collection of songs recorded over 4 years. Burning Up and Physical attraction were 1981/82, whereas Borderline is 1983. I have even heard Everybody may date from as early as 1980. It was a collection of singles and is mixed.

.

4. The fact that Sire kept releasing single after single - Everybody, Burning Up, Holiday (The first Top 20 hit), Borderline (First Top 10 and her best song to date) and then Lucky Star (Top 5 hit) and these songs had cemented Madonna in the charts. By the time Lucky star faded, it was late 1984. She can't have been too resentful they were hits though, as she had been struggling for success since 1978.

.

5. The image from those songs, Madonna came across as a Cyndi Lauper look and soundalike, and she sounded like Minnie Mouse on helium as she put it. Madonna wanted her own look and she struck out that with the Boy Toy/Slutty bride thing. She did not want to be the Prince to Lauper's Michael Jackson.

.

6. She knew she was right, the first album had made her known and a bona fide pop artist, but Virgin would make her an icon that would dominate the 80s along with Prince and Michael Jackson and her career would carry on through to the 2000s (She has lost her edge lately).

.

Finally

.

She was right, Like a virgin became a number smash hit for 7 weeks, the Like a virgin album would push Purple Rain off the top and spend many weeks at #1 and it went Diamond. More hits followed with Material Girl (#1), Dress you up, and Angel. Even more 1985 gave her another hit with Into the Groove and Crazy for you hit overseas. The album also broke her overseas with Like a Virgin becoming #1 over Europe and Australasia. The album was explosive and overshadowed the success of Madonna, an album now which has sold 5 million copies, but had only moved a million before Virgin came out.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

the unreleased 1981 track "Don't You Know" should have appeared on the album! It's a terrific song. This early demo has a poor sound quality, but it really should have been developed and added to the album.

I get not wanting to be solely known for your most popular material, especially if your style changed over time and you want ALL of your music to be embraced.

But, still, come on. She should accept the fact that there was a period when she was a huge pop star and most (though not all) people are fans of THAT music. Even if she doesn't still love it, there's no need to put it down.

I like it too, particularly Borderline and Lucky Star. Burning Up is good too, but compared to what came next,it is fluff and quite underwhelming. Still it gets props, kind of to Madonna what For You was to Prince.

.

Like a Virgin has a couple of fillers as well - Pretender and Stay, but True Blue is where she comes into her own and issues her forst epic album. Like a Prayer is the perfection, every song is a killer, even Dear Jessie (Of course Act of Contrition is not a song. With Vogue and the Immaculate collection, she stays on top and then carries it on with the horrendously underrated Erotica.

.

From this to Erotica shows how far she had come in 9 short years, I mean wow!

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

That was such a beautiful cover, that's not to say that the original cover isn't, but this is a great one; and the Lucky Star title too.

Don't know if it's up to Madonna. I think they kind of got tired of the touring life and always being under her shadow. They probably have moved on to other things.

Yes, I forgot about Rain on the Girlie Show. I never saw that tour as it toured only very limited dates in the US. Only saw it on video. But she needs to do it again!

In other Madonna news, she filmed Carpool Karaoke with James Corden airing soon. Should be fun! December is going to be a busy month for her. The RH Tour will air for Showtime, she receives an award from Billboard, does the Tears of the Clown thing for charity and now this. Never a dull moment for a Madonna fan!

In those days,Nicki and Donna were a major part of Madonna's shows. The three of them worked really well together.Nowadays, you don't even see (or even hear) the background singers on Madonna's tours smile Such a shame.

I'm sure Nicki and Donna are nice ladies, but I don't really miss them. Not that big a fan of really prominent backing vocals.

Time moves on. You can't expect an artist to always have the same people on stage.

Madonna won't feature them, because it's not like it was with Donna & Nikki

If I'm not mistaken she has only had backup singers after them with their first names

I miss em
They also brough an adult image to the stage (along with the musicians) the dancers are so much younger now, Donna & Nikki helped balance it out.

But Nikki & Donna both had babies and that started to affect them being able to go out touring.

When Donna and Niki toured with Madonna, the music was as impirtant as the visuals: a full band, live vocals, harmonies, solo's... Nowadays her band is just a machine, I wonder how much of what is heard by the audience is actually played live.

Just like the white winged dove...

This was the coolest Madonna ever was and the fact that she thinks 'Into the groove' and 'cherish' is less worthy than 'give me your lovin', 'hung up' (yuck!!!), 'sorry' , 'beautiful stranger' (her most annoying song ever) and '4 minutes' shows how disillutional she is nowadays.

But to be honest she always disses her back catalogue then goes back on her word - i.e. telling Oprah that she will never perform LAV again in 1998.

The alernative album name and cover screams cheese and 80s - glad they didn't go that route.
