Bass player Victor Bailey has died

I first learned of Victor long, long ago, as he was the bass player for Madonna's The Girlie Show Tour, which supported Erotica. But of course his career spanned much longer and further than that. This picture is from his Facebook page just a week ago.

And Madonna uses so many remixes in concert. The bass on the mix she used in concert is quite different than on the album. Victor and Omar really nailed it. For those who wonder, and if memory serves, it's the "Kenlou B-Boy Mix" that they use.

One of my favourite performances, such a cool idea to use that remix.

I do too! I think "Fever" was a remix version, as was "Justify My Love".

Right, "Fever" was based on the Edit One remix, "Justify My Love" used the William Orbit remix, and "Deeper and Deeper" used the David Morales Club Mix. I was recently listening to various jazz fusion type albums from the 80s and I saw Victor and Omar's names in the credits of a lot of those (along with Michael Bearden and Luis Conte, who were also in her band on the Girlie Show). It might have been musically her best band.

I'd agree with that 100%. It seemed to be her most interactive band, too. Paul Pesco has been with her off and on since the Virgin Tour. (He wasn't on Blond Ambition). Luis Conte was on the B.A. tour, too. While I love drummer Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffet (who played with The Jacksons for a long while), I think Omar brought a new level of tightness to The Girlie Show. I think TGS was the only M tour that Victor was part of. I also loved Jai Winding on keyboards (his last w/ Madonna, but not his first). The guy can play anything, blindfolded.

Michael Bearden also headed up MJ's band during the This Is It rehearsals. Moffat was back with MJ for that, too.

Yes. He played in more than 1000 records!
I was reading a recent interview and he said this about Madonna band.

"Every now and then you get the kid who has illusions about pop and all that, but I remind him, first thing, that every jazz artist isn’t a great musician. There were many times on a jazz gig or recording that I was just waiting to get my check and go home. I played with Madonna, Omar Hakim was on the drums, Michael Bearden and Jai Winding on keyboards, Paul Pesco on guitar and Luis Conte on percussion. That’s one of the all-time best bands I ever played with. By far. That band was kick-ass"

RIP

He was the bassist replacing Jaco Pastorius in the 1980s version of Weather Report. I think his involvement with the band, helped WR come up with their best album from the 1980s, Procession.

He said some cool things about Prince

"Prince is so bad he makes me sick! Plays everything like he *really* plays THAT instrument. He can write, arrange, produce, sing, dance, all of it. And of course these days with Rhonda Smith, he has the world's prettiest bass player in his band, and she funky as hell too, that don't make no kinna senss!!"

Victor was a magnificent bassist. He died from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He was only 56.
