Lee Fields & the Expressions – Special Night (Big Crown)

If you’re familiar with Lee Fields’ music, you’re probably familiar with his backstory too. He’s a soul singer that’s been active since his 1969 debut single, and in more recent years there’s been a renewed interest in him — if not a bigger interest than ever before — and it’s for his new music. He’s been pretty prolific and consistently great since 2009’s My World, and Special Night continues this. It rarely sounds like music that would’ve come out much later than the early ’70s, but Lee Fields isn’t reviving anything, he’s just playing the music he’s played and loved his whole life. As with the likeminded Charles Bradley, the songs are convincing and passionate enough that they’re as worth hearing as the oldies. They sound instantly familiar in a comforting way, not in a way where they feel redundant.

Lee Fields has written political music before, and given the political climate we’re currently in, you may expect those types of songs, but Special Night is mostly a love (and sex) album. The most major exception is “Make The World” (with its refrain of “We can make the world better if we come together”), which sounds like a 1970 Norman Whitfield composition, and there’s some crossover between the two topics like on “Where Is The Love,” where “love” isn’t talking about romantic love. But more often than not, romance wins out. Two of Special Night‘s best songs are its opening title track, where “special night” refers to how “every night is a special night when I’m with you,” and “Lover Man,” where the title is decidedly self-explanatory. Because “Make The World” is so fired up and this album drops four days before Election Day, it’s hard not to keep going back to the political thing. But maybe Lee is trying to say that in times like these, a soulful, comforting love-positive album is what we all need.

-Legion Riders Rescue Bruce-

Yesterday members of Post 54 Legion Riders, Dan Barkalow (pictured) and Bob Grigs with their friend Ryan Bailey represented Post 54 at the Veteran's Day ceremony conducted at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Holmdel. At the conclusion of the ceremony they decided to take advantage of the beautiful day by taking a ride to Manasquan before returning to Freehold.

On the way home, taking the back roads to Freehold, lead rider, Dan, noticed a broken down bike on the side of Allaire Road, near Allaire State Park. The Legion Riders pulled over to assist their fellow motorcyclist, who just happened to be Freehold native Bruce Springsteen.

Unable to get his bike started, Bruce called for help, hopped on the back of Ryan's bike and they drove to Mulligans in Farmingdale. One beer later his ride arrived.

Dan stated that Bruce was a very down to earth regular guy who fit right in with his fellow, not so famous, Freehold boys. Bruce did take their names and telephone numbers, so maybe they'll be riding together some day!

Album Review: Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood’s ‘Christmas Together’

CHUCK DAUPHIN NOVEMBER 12, 2016 - 6:27 AM

Ever since they began their careers around the same time, and especially after topping the charts in 1997 with “In Another’s Eyes,” one of the questions that Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood have found themselves asked the most is —- “When are you going to do a duets album?” It’s never been an easy question to answer, with Brooks and Yearwood both being aligned with different labels during their solo careers, as well as Brooks’ commitment to raising his children in Oklahoma. But, now – after almost two decades since that first collaboration, the two have united their talents on an album for the first time with Christmas Together.

Though, to be honest, this is not totally a “duets” album. There are some moments where the two singers make melody together, and each also have their solo moments in the spotlight. So, let’s cover the duets first. “I’m Beginning To See The Light” has a fun and flirtatious feel, combined with a Frank Sinatra / Dean Martin feel to it. The two keep that light and easy feeling on the classic “Marshmallow World,” which is also a highlight. Then, there’s the fun and frolic of the standard “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” which will no doubt please their fan following.

Brooks shines the brightest on the hilarious and cute “Ugly Christmas Sweater,” showing a little different side of the singer than we’re used to. It’s very enjoyable to hear him being romantic – but kind of a normal guy at the same time. He also surprises on the Jose Feliciano classic “Feliz Navidad,” which turns into the ultimate Christmas jam. Brooks takes a serious turn with the inspirational “Merry Christmas Means I Love You,” which SHOULD clear some of the unfortunate controversy about how some reference – or don’t reference the holiday season. The Country Music Hall of Fame member also gets to revel in the glory of a duet with one of his all-time heroes, James Taylor, with “The Thanksgiving Song (What I’m Thankful For),” a very sweet (and true) sentiment about life’s blessings.

Not to be outdone, Yearwood aims for the sky – and succeeds with the light and sassy “The Man With The Bag,” delivers a romantic nod with “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve,” and tips the hat to Dolly Parton with a cover of “Hard Candy Christmas.” Her vocal is nothing short of extraordinary on the song, which is a showcase for her strong and powerful vocal approach. You might see – and hear – Yearwood in a totally new light on “Santa Baby,” which is by far her most seductive performance ever. And, she pulls it off… Very well!

So, Garth and Trisha have given the fans what they have been waiting for – well, sort of. I think the success of this album will hopefully lead to a disc that combines their versions of classic duets with new songs (“Whiskey To Wine” from Garth’s upcoming solo Gunslinger disc being a fine example of what these two can do with new material). In any case, whether you are a fan of one or the other or both, this album is guaranteed to spend many a spin on your CD player or iPod….however you listen to music. It’s a great celebration of all things Christmas!
