Pretty sure the backing track was canned, not those guys on stage.

But the production sounds perfect! I'll bet he has a smokin' band if he tours.

"24K Magic" sounds like DJ Quik.
"Chunky" sounds like "Somebody Else's Guy" by Jocelyn Brown.

Sound like you got some mixing to handle boo

lol

Haven't heard Chunky yet, but for me a full album with 24K Magic/ Uptown Funk type of R&B material would be awesome! I think I have read somewhere that a significant part of his new album (5 or 6 songs) will be energetic songs. I have high hopes as I never was into his ballads and sappy pop stuff. The old Bruno Mars doesn't cut it for me, but this new funked up energetic Bruno works wonders for me! cool

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Yeah a bit, definately. Not his worst song though. That would probably be Grenade.

You got a point there.

Me personally I am a guy that listens to the music first and foremost. If the music doesn't appeal to me I will never get into the lyrics. Only when I like the actual music I am starting to listen to the lyrics a bit. And only if I believe them to be interesting I will really dive into them and try to fully understand what the song is about.

But in most cases (like with 24K Magic most likely) I never get to that phase as I am just too busy enjoying the groove of a song, while ignoring the bad/cheesy lyrics! lol

That is another great tune in early 80's R&B style. This is promising for the new album! I'd rather hear this type of retro R&B stuff than most of the other music you hear on the radio these days. If Bruno manages to get this style really popular again, other artists might follow. One can only dream! lol

Congrats! You're actually a smart listener.

I thought I was the only one who could enjoy reflecting on David Bowie's lyrics as much as dancing to Bruno Mars

Yes, you are right there is a racial componet. Bruno said when he first tried to make it in the industry he was told he had great songs but a music executive told him they were going to find some blonde blue eyed white boys to sing his songs.

So there is your racial component. It is time for a person of color to sing some soul.

Better than no funk at all. And if rappers and RnB artist don't like go make something better.

I was scratching my head too when I read that FRAUD comment. I for one am very glad to hear someone bringing some funk back into popular Top 40 music.

Graycap23 why U mad bro lol

Bruno is widely regarded as one of the most talented songwriters of this era with his ability to blend genres and make throwback music with a modern twist. Yes he's no innovator, we get that, he's probably gonna end up being labeled as an 'icon' at best. Nobody will talk about him the way you'd talk about Prince or David Bowie or fuckin Ian Curtis. It doesn't matter, he's aware of that.

You think it's hard for him to recruit the baddest musicians today and lock himself up to come up with dark concept matters and end up creating this masterpiece that gets critics all crazy and excited like they do whith Frank Ocean albums or even Miguels?

Bruno Mars is still stuck in the 50s or 90s or whatever, he grew up on that funk/doo-wop/soulpop shit (Like we all did) and he ain't ready to leave that in favor of some "critically acclaimed" output.

Plus, he actually said that he does that as a persona thing. Like. When you see him in SNL rocking shorts and baseball hats, it's his way of living 90s R&B, he probably grew up seeing Boyz II Men doing R&B slow jams in late night TV ans he was like "I wanna feel what they feel". That also explains his all-band same-color outfits back in 2011 with Doo-Wop era (Cause thats what Temptations and other 50s groups used to wear), and his feel-free psychedelic shirts and hats in 2012 (His way of living the late 70s in a post-modern 10s world).

Now tell me if there's anyone on his level of popularity out of all those popstars you see on TV, who have a vision like this and do it for a purpose which they don't care whether it's a fact to the world or not.

Not to mention that for a pop song, "24K Magic" and "Uptown Funk" and also some UJ cuts, are fuckin well-produced.
