Remember when Eric Clapton was spotted recording with the Rolling Stones over the summer? A source close to the band revealed, “Eric was in the next studio along so he came in to say hello,” and “they ended up jamming and recorded two songs.” The source added that producer Don Was said it was “the best thing he has ever done with the Stones.”

While the Stones have yet to confirm the new music, they’ve been dropping some major hints on social media, most of which point to the blues.

Yesterday, Mick Jagger tweeted out a photo of a harmonica case with Rolling Stones picks thrown in, and cleverly captioned it with the hashtag #playingtheblues.

This morning, he tweeted out “rehearsing something new.”

And less than an hour ago, the band swapped out their classic red tongue logo for a blue one, across their entire online presence.

In a new interview with the French outlet Le Figaro, as translated by Google, producer Was confirmed the genre of the album, and revealed that it is scheduled to be released this December. “The album consists of covers of blues songs of Chicago,” he began. “It was recorded live in the studio in just three days, with the musicians in a circle around the microphones. There was no retouching on the pieces. The record sounds very crude, very authentic. It captures the essence of what they are.”

Was also confirmed that as suspected, Eric Clapton will be in the record. “He was recording his own album in the studio next door,” he explained. “He had only to cross the hall to join! Hearing them play in the studio, he had also gasped. He was still a teenager when he saw them in the clubs of Richmond in their infancy, as a fan. He borrowed one of Keith’s guitars and started playing two songs. It was exceptional enough to see.”

A new message posted today on The Stones' Facebook page and Twitter feed reads, "TOMORROW. 2PM GMT / 6AM PST / 9AM EST," and accompanies a brief video featuring an animated version of its tongue-and-lips logo along with a snippet of the same new blues tune the band is seen performing in a previously posted teaser clip.

The Rolling Stones: Blue and Lonesome

This December, The Rolling Stones will issue Blue & Lonesome, their first studio album in over a decade…

The album – recorded in just three days in London at the end of last year – takes the band back to their blues roots and features songs by artists such as Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf. It was produced by Don Was and ‘The Glimmer Twins’ (i.e. Jagger/Richards).

The music was played live in the studio without overdubs where the band were joined by Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Matt Clifford (keyboards). Eric Clapton appears on two tracks.

As well as the standard CD, there will be a deluxe edition of Blue & Lonesome (picture above) which will feature a 75-page mini-book about the making of the album and band postcard prints. A2LP gatefold heavyweight vinyl edition (with download code) is also available.

Blue & Lonesome will be released on 2 December 2016.

I was wondering how they allegedly slapped the album together in three days. I apparently missed the part about it being all covers.

Ironically, the blues men they are covering were all pretty old when they recorded a lot of these songs originally, and most continued playing until they croaked

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
