I've been an A.G. fan from almost the beginning. I remember Michael W. Smith more from his first album, than Amy. I caught her along Age To Age. Amy's journey has certainly been an interesting one. And frankly, I think she faced a lot of covert religion sexism with her mainstreaming her music as time went on. Christian music can be pretty bad sometimes. There were very few acts that held the attention of an audience in the 80s, which was an age of synthesizers, experimenting with sounds and more danceable music. I think some of the church gave up on A.G. by the time Heart In Motion came out, but I thought it was a pretty nice record.

unguarded
was so amazing, and Lead Me On was very emotional and raw. The former was heavily influenced by 80s pop, while the latter was almost her own unplugged CD without being unplugged. It was layered with piano and acoustic guitars, and the electric keyboards were at a minimum. It was probably her most unusual record to date.

But then she got pregnant and started making music while carrying her baby (before and after the womb), and it had a whole different feel to it. It was the antithesis of the heaviness on Lead Me On, despite having songs about sexual abuse ("Ask Me"), and the stress of being a wife & mother ("Hats"). She really threw caution to the wind with Heart In Motion, and took on a much more mainstream approach, even more than unguarded. The lyrics were equally about love, hope, and God. I remember the furor over the video for "Good For Me" and "Baby Baby", because she was sexy but not dirty (you know she had enough problems), and (God forbid) she had a guy in her video! What's that? A male actor in a fictional video?! Perish the thought!

For me, though, Heart In Motion was one of her last really good albums. I didn't connect at all with House of Love, although apparently, Cher did. She covered "The Power" on her Believe album. I think Amy lost some fans by that point, for many reasons. People move on, but also partly because she had gone through a divorce (and all the judgy Christians pointed fingers at that, yet half of them probably had a divorce or affair under their belt), and she started publicly going out with her new husband-to-be Vince Gill (whom she also dueted with on the title track). Also, doing a secular cover song, "Big Yellow Taxi", and releasing that as a video fully separated her from solely being a Christian artist.

"Good For Me" co-written by Wayne Kirkpatrick, and produced by Keith Thomas. That pretty much guarantees a late 80's/early 90's signature sound, and a hit on radio. It skips right along, and apologizes to no one for putting a smile on your face.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm only a casual fan of her more secular work, but to me her best album is one you didn't mention. Behind the Eyes. It has a pop/rock and folk/country sound similiar to Sheryl Crow and Jewel. It's quite mature lyrically and thoughtful.

I recommend it to everyone. It really doesn't have much religious content.

I think I had a copy of Behind The Eyes. I did attend the tour in my town. It was a very nice show. But for some reason, later on, I ended up selling the tour book & the CD on eBay. It was my 2nd Amy Grant concert, the first being the unguarded tour.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
