My own personal top 10 would be;

1. Prince
2. Bruce Springsteen
3. Parliament/Funkadelic
4. Michael Jackson
5. Sly and the Family Stone
6. James Brown
7. Little Richard
8. Marvin Gaye
9. Elvis
10. Stevie Wonder

There may be more talented artists than some of the ones listed, but the one's I've chosen are there based on more than just raw talent. For me, these are the top 10 artists of all time.

I also question whether or not James Taylor should be on this list.

I love James Taylor, but he is guilty of writing the same song 100 different ways.

The guy never deviated from his formula.

.

Personally, I would replace him with Fleetwood Mac.

.

I think that Cat Stevens is better and more original than James Taylor.

.

Nobody sounds like Cat Stevens.

.

And his song 'Wild World' is just as good as James Taylor's 'Fire and Rain'

.

I put James Taylor in the same category as I would put John Denver.

.

Part of it might be cause Cat converted to Islam. Those who control the media despise Muslims.

And the fact his last entry in the charts was way way waaaaayyyyyy back in 1977 means nothing. The man was relevant only in the early 1970s and with the exception of that 1977 hit which has a western sound and feel, was the only one showing any signs of his Islam (Scenes in the video show a madrassa - Islamic school), every other Cat Stevens song was from the time he was a Greek Christian. Even when schoolyard was released back in 1977, he was still Cat Stevens and only became Yusuf Islam in 1979 when he converted and gave up western music.

.

Sometime around 2010, he released a new album which completely bombed (Failed all charts and sold in the 3 figures), also Stevens considers himself a Muslim of peace and has decried terrorism several times. Not all Muslims are terrorists, but I realise on an American site, that message will only partially permeate the Trumpheads.

.

Cat Stevens was very much in the hippy singer/songwriter mould that was popular like half a century ago. Very overrated maudling crap - Muslim or not. He had 3 or 4 decent albums between 1970 and 1972 and several hit singles between 1967 and 1977, but he was hardly a global force in music. He only really hit in the UK and none of his singles got past the Top 5(No number 1 hits). His best song Morning has Broken sounded a lot like Simon and Garfunkel and more English than anything vaguely Islamic.

.

Let us not trundle out Islamophobia as an excuse for poor performance on a chart. Besides most Islamic mullahs ban western pop music as sinful and unIslamic, they have their own music anyway which is mostly muezzins and stuff. It is their religion and culture and they are entitled to it.

If we change the title to "Greatest ROCK Artists Ever" then I can agree with this list.

Since it's Rolling Stone, that would be redundant to title it that. It's like a list in Downbeat, there wouldn't be a point in saying the list is jazz and CMT making a list would automatically be country.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Well right off the bat my issues are where is

THE BEE GEES
BILLY JOEL
JOHN MELLENCAMP

THE POLICE

Quite a few on this list need to go. ALso as someone said where are the freaking women.

JOAN JETT
HEART

and honestly I would also put Cheap Trick and the Cars and knock a few off this list. As usual people complain about the Beatles being there and being overrated blah blah etc... get over it already.

I can find issues with so many on this list. The Ramones, sorry but they are overrated, i'd include them but way down the list. Hank Williams, The Stooges, The Shirelles, Talking Heads....

I said those who control the media stopped liking Cat Stevens. Last I checked, Christian Americans don't control anything.

Boy am I ever sorry that I brought up Cat Stevens.

I wasn't saying that he should be on the list.

I was arguing that James Taylor shouldn't be on the list.

I don't think that they left him off because he converted to Islam.

Fleetwood Mac was left off the list too

And they definitely out rank Cat Stevens and are not Muslims.

Oh right,so you mean Jews controlling the media.

Oh yes all Jews control the media and we all hate Muslims right ( i have some Jewish ancestry).

So you point out hate by offering further hate.

Not everyone is Christian, a lot of s are atheist and Jewish.

.

Also your BIGOTRY is shown by the fact that Mr Stevens (Real birth name Stephan Georgiou) was signed to Dick James music between 1966 and 1980. Dick James by the way was Jewish, but you know we hate Muslims. I think these so called Christians have a lot more to answer for with Islmaophobia, xenophobia, homophobia, and any other phobia Trump and members of the republican right dream up, rather than the Jews.

.

True Judaism is where people prove themselves by their deeds and especially their compassion to their fellow human beings, not judging or supporting someone merely because of their faith or race. That is what so called Christians do.

Where is Fleetwood Mac??? And I know it's maybe a matter of taste, but the Supremes were the Motown group that broke down racial barriers crossing over big time into the (white) mainstream, not the Four Tops or the Miracles, so they deserve to be higher on the list than those Motown acts.

Just like the white winged dove...

I did. First of all because Sly more or less stopped making music more than thirty years ago.(Maybe I should have said productive instead of creative.) Secondly because of the sheer diversity in Prince's music: he could write slow jams like Do Me, Baby, rock jams like I Like It There and mini rock operas like All My Dreams... But if Sly had kept his head together, who knows what he might have done.

Not talking about personal preference, but having michael that low makes no sense at all. If you ask people around the world about the greatest artist he will be one of the most mentioned. His influence is still seen today. And the impact he made is huge. You can not tell me his impact was not on the Elvis level.

It's always like that with lists like this: why is MY favourite artist not higher up? I couldwondery: why is Kate Bush not on the list? And the answer would be: because she never made it big in the USA. So I'm totally cool with one of my faves not being included.

It's like if they've read RS, then they'd know why Michael Jackson is not higher or why the Bee Gees & Donna Summer is not there. When Off The Wall was a popular album, Wenner sent out a letter saying that Mike did not warrant a cover, but that they would do an article on him. Entertainer types like Mike & Madonna are not what RS praises most. They're more old showbiz influnced, which is what the boomer rock fans rebelled against. Being influenced by Howlin' Wolf was cool, but being influenced by Sammy Davis Jr isn't. If you notice John Lennon tends to get more praise than Paul McCartney. Paul made showbiz sounding songs like Honey Pie & Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Guitar bands, especially blues based, was RS thing (maybe not as much today) and that is what a majority of the list is. It's not a popularity thing per se. I'd say Barry Manilow & Whitney Houston was way more popular than Velvet Underground. But Barry & Whitney does not really fit the taste of RS founders, nor does acts associated with disco like Donna Summer & Bee Gees. A writer for RS in the 1970s who was a fan of disco had said Wenner did not want to feature it in the magazine. Wenner also did not care much for progressive rock, probably because there's lesser blues/R&B influence and more European classical influence. But disco became so popular that it couldn't be ignored any longer. RS didn't really praise the Eagles until they reunited in the 1990s. I think they cared more about Don Henley's solo career than the Eagles heyday in the 1970s
