No real surprises. Agree or disagree (and for what it's worth, I strongly disagree) these are the artists most people would expect to be on such a list.

Remember that overrated artists thread from a month or two ago? Well, the top 5 of this list would probably all qualify for that thread.

Hmmm. Beach Boys ranked higher than Stevie Wonder? Interesting... interesting. Nirvana ranked above MJ? Intriguing. Madonna above Bowie? Sacrilege.

I don't think that U2 even belongs on this list let alone be in the 22 spot.

.

If we must include U2 it should be in the 100 spot.

.

And 'Tenacious D' isn't on the list at all and they should be in the number one spot. wink

The Stones before Chuck?

There would be no Rolling Stones without Chuck Berry and even Mick said so.

This list is a JOKE and so is Rolling Stones.

Elvis OVER Stevie Wonder, Little Richard and Marvin Gaye??????? BAAHAHAHAAAHAHAAHA

U2 OVER Prince and Michael????

Nirvana over Michael???

In what universe??!?!?!

U2 and Jay Z should not be on this list IMHO

Michael, David Bowie and Queen should be much much higher.....

The Beatles should not be in the number one spot. I like a few Beatle songs but they are mad overrated. They are not the most influential artist of all time.

Its interesting how RS placed Beatles and Elvis in the top 3, two of the biggest selling acts of all time but did not place Michael up there with them. If the top 3 criteria is based solely on sells then Michael deserves to be right after the Beatles.

How does anyone make a list like this and completely forget to include the Bee Gees? It's criminal how underrated they are.

I always wondered what are the demographics of those who come up with such lists. How come there's so few women on the list and why are most artists listed here have their peak in the 1950-1960s, surely there were great artists that came before and after? There's only 8 women on the list (that's 8% while 92% are male), excluding bands that have women members and it's as if they put Aretha in 9th place in order to not make the disparity even more obvious in the top ten category. I mean you have to go down all the way to n.36 to find the next woman and that's Madonna. Not too mention there's a favoritism over classic rock, I mean you have Led Zeppelin, Cream, and the Yardbirds there when they are variations of a similar sound. they even have some of the same band members. Then again you have ACDC and U2 on the list, so how can I take this list seriously in the first place.

Because Jann Wenner is a baby boomer and what is now called classic rock was the main focus in the early years of Rolling Stone. Rock fans were the main buyers of RS during that time. I used to read Rolling Stone in the 1980s & 1990s and even subcribed to it for awhile. So not much on this list is a suprise to me, just like most of who is inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame isn't. Jann & RS is behind the hall. RS was always praising Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and one year had the Sex Pistols album as the best in history, even above The Beatles who are usually at the top.

Saw this list years ago but I'll play along.

A Rolling Stone "Best of" list consisting mostly of rock acts with the Beatles ranked #1.

What a surprise rolleyes

True, but The Stones were more creative in their songwriting. I can't imagine Chuck Berry writing Sympathy For the Devil or Gimme Shelter. Just like Prince was a more creative songwriter than Sly Stone. And that's coming from someone who absolutely loves Sly's music. Being first doesn't automatically mean you're "better" than the acts you inspire.

When I was in school, I remember U2 as the most popular and talked about band (among the guys anyway.) I'm not a big fan myself, but they were huge in the 80s/ early 90s. They even beat The Stones' record of doing the best selling tour ever. So they must have been doing something right.

If we change the title to "Greatest ROCK Artists Ever" then I can agree with this list. Of course I would put Prince in the top ten but that would mean either Ray or Richard would need to go... confuse Damn! Making a top ten isn't as easy as you think...

How is U2 influential and groundbreaking in the grand scheme of music? I've always wanted to know that. They are always listed in these types of list and I never understood why.

I think that they get points for being the only big band from Ireland.

And for being such out spoken antiwar pacifists against the IRA and the terrorism in Ireland.

They were huge in the late eighties and early nineties, but that doesn't mean that they deserve to be ranked above Prince, David Bowie, Neil Young, Michael Jackson, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Elvis Costello, CCR, Talking Heads, Simon & Garfunkel and so many others.

Shouldn't be any shit hop on the list at all, or any post 2000 only artists. Shit hop has added NOTHING to the tapestry of modern music.

.

Are glad that Prince is above MJ and Madonna, that is the one good thing about the list.

.

Elvis Presley is waaaaaayyyyyyyy overated, I think Elbvis Costello should be higher than him.

.

Who the fuck is the Clark and its Bruce Springsteen not Stien. And its Diana not Dianna.

Who cares what a bunch of hippies from the 60s think are the top artists. This rag isn't even relevant or taken seriously anymore. It's a relic of the past much like MTV.

I agree. I do like that Bono is very outspoken on social welfare issues and humanity but as you mentioned that is no reason to rank them higher than those other artists who are far more influential and groundbreaking.

Rolling Stones has always ranked Prince higher than MJ and Madonna. Its obvious they think more highly of Prince (and that takes nothing away from the other two) I wasn't really surprised by that. They always snub Michael and underrate him. I personally think both MJ and Prince should be in the top 25.

I also question whether or not James Taylor should be on this list.

I love James Taylor, but he is guilty of writing the same song 100 different ways.

The guy never deviated from his formula.

.

Personally, I would replace him with Fleetwood Mac.

.

I think that Cat Stevens is better and more original than James Taylor.

.

Nobody sounds like Cat Stevens.

.

And his song 'Wild World' is just as good as James Taylor's 'Fire and Rain'

.

I put James Taylor in the same category as I would put John Denver.

Part of it might be cause Cat converted to Islam. Those who control the media despise Muslims.
