I think the word "group" can refer to both a band and a singing group. But bands usually have instrumentalists in it. That's why I don't get the term "boy band" when in the past they were just called a vocal group. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. It's like the 1950s and 60s Isley Brothers were a vocal group, but when the younger members joined, they became a band. Techically, some of the Mr. Biggs era Isley Brothers songs were really Ronald Isley solo, some had Ernie playing guitar. But none of the other members were involved. I used to think The Four Seasons were a vocal group, but later found out they were a band.
