Last year I watched Amy (2015) that won the Oscar for best documentary recently, and it was a solid piece a 4 out of 5 popcorn it shows how incredibly talented Amy was, and how dedicated she was to her music, but also how insecure and self-destructive she was which led to her demise at only 27. It also hightlighted some of the people around her were toxic opportunists, and the media treatment that was downright cruel at times mad looking at you Jay Leno ). But despite the dark elements in this film it really celebrated Amy's talent for jazz and it made me appreciated her alot more, for her personality and her song writing skills. I highly recommend it.

I haven't seen the documentary yet. I'll make a point of looking for it this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.

It's a good doco that doesn't sugar coat things or demonise its subject, it was fair and balanced. I only gave it 4 because it kind of followed the usual formula....unlike the excellent Listen to Me Marlon (2015) which utilizes hundreds of hours of audio that Marlon Brando recorded over the course of his life to tell his own story without the usual experts, family and friends. That was my fav doco of last year 5 out of 5 popcorn

I even had a higher opinion of the film. The thing I thought that was special is that it helped me fully appreciate how fragile and vulmerable she was, and showed enough of her family and environment that made you understand why. It had a profound impact on me, as I was much more upset about her death than I was before I watched it. At first it just seems like ordinary home videos but at some point it unexpectedly builds into a real life tragedy.

And she was so damn likeable too, she reminded me of some of my friends.......and that scene where she puts on an accent and gives a tour of new home, I've done that lol it does humanise her and it got me at the end bawl which I wasn't expecting. I've watched alot of doco like this over the years, but this one really moved me.

The doc was unique as it was similar to Marlon's in the fact that it was all in her own words and lyrics and used only archival footage and no talking heads

Yuuup that is what I meant. In the Marlon doco it was only his voice from audio files that had never been heard before (including self-hypnosis tapes) and a Marlon hologram telling his story, and in Amy it was her voice, lyrics, songs and archive interviews from her friends, producers etc telling her story. Both docos were excellent.

She sang like an old soul, and her phrasing was wicked like those classic jazz singers eg. Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan nod which made her stand out vocally and stylistically.

It's a tragedy she didn't really leave more work behind.

Everything she did put out was of the highest quality though. She is missed.

Remembering Amy Winehouse: 6 of the Late Singer's Most Iconic Lyrics

Amy Winehouse performs at Lollapalooza on August 5, 2007 in Chicago
JOHN D. SHEARER/BEI/BEI/SHUTTERSTOCK

Saturday (July 23) marks five years since the world lost Amy Winehouse, one of the purest and most troubled talents in the industry. While her life and career were both cut too short, the music that she left behind will live for decades to come. In remembrance of Amy, here's a look at six of her most iconic lyrics.

Amy Winehouse's Father Mitch Blasts 'Amy' Director After Best Documentary Oscar Win

"We only said goodbye with words/ I died a hundred times/ You go back to her/ And I go back to black"
"Back to Black," also the name of Winehouse's final studio album, brilliantly expresses the way it feels to say "goodbye" to someone on the outside without truly being able to let them go or move on -- instead, one fades to black. The song was written by Winehouse and Mark Ronson, who also produced the track.

"I always have to comfort you when I'm there/ But that's what I need you to do, stroke my hair/ ‘cause I've forgotten all of young love's joy/ Feel like a lady, and you my lady boy"
"Stronger Than Me," from Winehouse's debut album, Frank, is a take on dealing with the frustration of dating somebody who may be older in age, but acts immature and needs to be taken care of. The track won the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting award for Best Contemporary Song Musically and Lyrically.

"He walks away/ The sun goes down/ He takes the day/ But I'm grown/ And in your way/ In this blue shade/ My tears dry on their own"
A lesson in picking up the pieces and moving forward despite the challenges, "Tears Dry on Their Own" is a powerful song that reminds us not to sweat things we can't control. Winehouse holds her head high and offers herself new perspective.

Amy Winehouse's 'Rehab' Gets Smooth R&B Cover by Mark Johns & Tennyson

"If my man was fighting/ Some unholy war/ I would be behind him/ Straight shook up beside him/ With strength he didn't know"
"Some Unholy War" is a ballad that powerfully and emotionally captures Winehouse's willingness to stand by her man through thick and thin, giving him strength and promising that they will pull through together. "Some Unholy War" is the ninth track on Back to Black.

"Rulers one thing but come Brixton/ Nobody stands in between me and my man/‘cause it's me and Mr. Jones"
"Me and Mr. Jones," is widely viewed as a song about rapper Nas (Nasir Jones), who became good friends with Winehouse. The song expresses her frustration with a friend who made her miss the Slick Rick concert, but that nothing will stand in the way of her and Mr. Jones.

"They tried to make me go to rehab/ I said, no, no, no/ Yes, I been black/ But when I come back, you'll know, know, know"
"Rehab," the lead single from Back to Black, turned Winehouse from a lesser-known soul singer to a mainstream act. The song, now bittersweet for many, chronicles the days when people around the singer encouraged her to seek treatment for addiction while she insisted that it was unnecessary, both in the song and in real life. The track peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It's still very, very sad, isn't it. Especially when you see the documentary pieced together and see how fragile everything was.

On the last night of the London 21 Nights tour her long version of Love is a Losing Game as the first song at the after party was great as was her saying earlier how shocked she was that Prince was a fan and wanted to know if she could be there to do a song together and him saying that particular track was his favourite because of her voice on it, is that how he said it?

I passed the church from Back to Black video today and they are renovating it, it has been very run down and derelict but how it looked in the video was so right.

Through it all, I always adored Amy and her effortless talent. Love these pics of her pre-Frank.

She had such a strong profile.

This was supposed to be the original album cover for her album Frank.

It's a shame not just because of her great talent and the music she could have given to us, but because she had a life in front of her, just ran out of time to do so. I love her music.

It's an amazing, heartbreaking film. We were all expectators of her decline, it was all so fast, so relentless. I would have loved to see where her career would have taken her, had she managed to sort herself out. Her two albums are probably my favourite 21st Century albums (Lioness, not so much...)
