Nothing Looks The Same In The Light

This 1982 track from Wham!'s debut album, Fantastic (Innervision/CBS), was, in my humble opinion, the BEST track on that particular record.

Sure it featured some other classic dance numbers, but lyrically, you could see George's true craftsmanship shining through.

The song is somewhat a typical George Michael track - breathy vocals, dreamy and atmospheric, sensitive yet strong.

"I watch you breathe, I cannot sleep
I touch your hair, I kiss your skin
And hope the morning sun won't wake you too soon...

For when you wake, and look at me
You never know, you just might see
Another boy who crept into your room...

Take your time, that's what you told me
Take your time..

But I fell head first and I just don't know what to do -

Nothing looks the same in the light
Only a fool like me would take to heart
The things you said you meant last night
Nothing looks the same in the light
I'll keep my feet, firm on the ground
Nothing looks the same in the light
There's danger in a stranger
With a warm hand and a kiss so right
Nothing looks the same in the light
It's been a pleasure, see you around..."

Though perhaps not one of his best, it certainly fooled me into thinking it was George Michael or Wham! circa 1986 - by which time his songwriting had already proven to be mature and from the heart (even if you could dance to it!).

I was just wondering, for any FANS out there, what do you think of this song? Is there anything you'd like to share regarding GM/Wham!?

IAM

this is classic George and why he's one of my absolute favorite artists ever!!!

i don't really care for "shoot.." or "freek" so i've taken the time to go back and rediscover the early songs of George and Wham.

where are the George's of today?

This was definitely one of my favorite tracks from the "Fantastic" record. It still sound fresh and soulful today as it did 20 years ago. I'm surprised no one's covered it yet. But then again, a different version would only kill the integrity of the original.

I'm a big GM fan, but I've never been interested in Wham's music (similar to Robbie Williams/Take That and Peter Gabriel/Genesis, although clearly very different styles of music) - what am I missing out on?

There's JUST SO MUCH you're missing out on!!! Honestly, I don't listen to THAT much Wham! music anymore, mainly Gm solo, since I think its better!! I'm soo happy to see I ain't alone in this. smile smile
Indeed, Wham!'s music was more 'fun' if you like (don't know if that's a good word) - also, the energy was different. Actually that's it, the ENERGY was different.

George grew as a writer, and that's what happens. We move forward. His writing needed to expand and go in a new direction.

But I would urge any GM fan to explore Wham!'s catalogue of stuff (if they haven't already), because it's still GM, no matter how you slice the cake. He was the creative force behind Wham! - the songs were all him. Wham! was an idea, an energy that he used to get into the game. It worked well for him for a while - but it ran it's course in the end.

Fantastic (1982), Make It Big (1984) and The Final/Music From The Edge Of Heaven (1986) all contain great pop songs/ballads.

Highlights:
-Nothing Looks The Same In The Light
-Club Tropicana
-Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
-Everything She Wants
-Like A Baby
-Freedom
-Careless Whisper
-Last Christmas
-The Edge Of Heaven
-I'm Your Man
-A Different Corner
-Where Did Your Heart Go?
-Blue (Armed With Love) Live In China

...other Wham! songs are equally enjoyable, but I would imagine these are among some of the timeless, timeless Wham! classics.

Yes, I've always liked this song. One of the best from Fantastic (together with Club Tropicana & Love Machine).

Blue (armed with love) is IMHO a sort of remake of this song.
