Last night on Unsung they did a doc/interview that was incredible! on Sly and the family Stone, showing him at his absolute funkiest! Such a bright man and total talent and how the decline from drugs had totally taken them out of the musical landscape, Hes not looking to good from the toll his drug taking took on him , but intresting to see hes alive and still making music.. alone .. in a camper parked on a street in crenshaw, Loved him!

Love Sly's music, but that downfall into drugs and idleness is just depressing. And yes, he looks terrible nowadays.

I definitely think Sly & the Family Stone is the #1 strongest influence on Prince's classic-era music. There are actually times when Prince seemed to be doing a Sly-impression. Even the multi-color, dual-gender bands are at least in part inspired by Sly.

He deserves enormous credit for his groundbreaking and timeless music circa 1967 to 1976, but since then...? It's just decades on decades of depression and drug-addiction. Sigh...

He probably does not live in camper on Crenshaw these days because the docu is from 2012 and as far as I know he got his masters back, or royalties, or both?

I wonder how he was able to take showers, cook, use a bathroom etc. while living in a camper for all those years.

I´ve often read how Marvin Gaye, James Brown or Larry Graham felt about Prince but to this day I still haven´t read a single comment of what Sly thought about Prince.

I know Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Sly had a huge influence on Prince but , as much as I like all those artists, they don´t even come close to the impact that Prince´s music has on me.

He's an elusive character, I've rarely heard him mention other artists. He worked with Jesse Johnson though, so its pretty safe he kept his ears close to the Minneapolis camp like everybody else.
