Billy Preston

Billy Preston, organist, and pianist for Ray Charles, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and more, was gay. Because of the lack of acceptance of homosexuality in society at the time, and Preston's Christian upbringing, he turned to alcohol and cocaine to battle the lack of reconciliation with both of those factors, for years.

In 1991, he was busted for cocaine, insurance fraud, and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy. He entered rehabilitation for nine months and had another three months of house arrest. He had malignant hypertension, and died from complications of that in 2006, at age 59. After this passing, his friends revealed that Preston himself had been a victim of sexual abuse as a child.

I can only assume that in a society that is accepting of homosexuals as just one of the group, and the much wider availability of counseling for victims of sexual abuse, that perhaps Preston's life might have been less rocky, and less addictive, and even more productive in music and art. And he might still be alive.

Today, September 2, would have been Billy's 70th birthday.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I think he had a very successful career. Two #1 pop hits and two other in the top 5. Played with Ray Charles, played with the Beatles, Sam Cooke, Sly, ect. What more could you ask for.

Most rock stars lives are rocky, hell I should say all.

I wasn't implying he wasn't successful, for sure. My intention was that his career and life could have been different and possibly happier with the struggles he faced. He definitely left a wonderful mark in music through his life.
