Pop star Martone: Janet Jackson is the most undervalued music artist
1inmusic: What type of music do you listen to? Martone: I listen to feel good music, music that makes me want to dance like Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Rihanna. When I want to feel sexy, I put on Jill Scott 1st and 2nd Album.
1inmusic: Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist? Martone: Janet Jackson, even though she has achieved so much in her career, broke multiple records, and received countless awards. She is still not inducted into the Hall of Fame of music, to me that is the saddest thing and there is no excuse for it. She is the blueprint for all that inspire to be dance artists, she is influential to many major artists in the world especially women.

Yeah, I stopped paying close attention to her after Rhythm Nation, but it makes NO SENSE that she's not in the Hall of Fame. Inspired an entire generation of females, more so than Madonna if you ask me. Make it so, Number One... |

Yuuuuuuuuuup she really got f**ked over and the backlash kind of shocked her too, cause she wasn't use to getting that kind of bad press coverage.......that was usually reserved for her brother. I know no one stays on top forever, music trends change etc but it was sad to see that one mistake that she and Justin made, cost her dearly.

Janet is one of the most underrated pop artist currently. Like Goddess said, pop culture trends change from decade to decade but in Janet's case its sad how she fell from grace because she didn't deserve the media backlash. IMO, Janet is undervalued because she is a Jackson and because she is a Black woman and I believe she is still black listed to this day (not as bad as in 2004) but its still there. I don't see her ever going back to the Grammy's or ever working with CBS or ever endorsing Viacom/Clear Channel publications or marketing again and after the way they treated her.... I honestly don't blame her. Its sad how you have to die or something bad has to happen before you can get the respect you deserve. It would be nice if some of the artists she inspired came out in her defense but this generation of pop stars are selfish and cowards. They didn't defend Michael so I doubt they will for Janet. |

The media will never let her forget about it too! Nearly every year we are reminded about it around Superbowl time.....but hardly any discussion about the double standard of the unfair treatment she got. Also not alot of her peers came out to support her.....most jumped on the Justin gravy train. Maybe too afraid that they too would get similar treatment.....I remember the hostile atmosphere at the time....it was like she had killed somebody and they wanted her blood! WORD, even though her legendary status is already set in stone. The RNRHOF is notorious for excluding black women. Janet, Diana, Patti, Whitney, Chaka--they all belong in. Hell, it took Donna Summer dying for them to finally induct her! The fact that it took eight years after her first year of eligibility for Janet to even get a nomination is pretty telling as far as the politics behind whole organization are concerned. In your opinion. The media tends to liken every pop female who comes out to Madonna (or, they used to, anyway), but it does not mean her influence is greater than Janet's. Janet's stamp is all over just about every prominent pop/R&B artist today. Whenever you see a young chick doing intricate choreography in her video, it's Janet's influence you see. Whenever you see an artist strut across a stage in a headset mic, it was Janet who made that popular. Hell, Janet was the reason Youtube was invented (Google it). She's always been underrated, and even with her RNRHOF nom last year and returning with a #1 album after being dormant for several years, not much has changed on that front, but one thing is for certain--her influence has reverberated throughout the industry for years. When it comes to strictly dance performing, Janet has had more influence than Madonna on today's generation. No other female performer was doing intricate choreography on an high intense level like Janet. All these girls Britney, Mya, Pink, Aaliyah, Beyonce etc ALL model and take from JANET. Funny thing is, there hasn't been a female performer since Janet that can kill the stage with sass, sleek dance moves with funky music. Yea, Janet is def undervalued. Janet will fall in a Donna Summer category unfornately and I think thats sad because you shouldn't have to acknowledge someone's influence and impact after they are gone or something bad happens. |
