Social media for the long time advocates of independent and college radio in North America has been stagnant for months. Its long running music "marathon" is apparently not happening for the first time in decades. RIP CMJ?

I don't think it's that big a deal because there are a lot of festivals that still present that same type of alternative/indie type of music like the pitchfork festival.

The name always struck as kind of weird and ageist, implying only people of college age could like that kind of music.

I agree, Glinda. However CMJ was once an important resource as an impartial, open source to share new and emerging artists as well as gauge their performance without heavy payola or reliance on advertising to support programming. As popular radio in the US was corporatized to the point that now songs and songwriters count on that '5 seconds between stations' to make annoying buzzworthy content disguised as songs, college radio and indie radio once provided the rare opportunities to break an act. Its just unfortunate.

But now there's Internet radio and streaming services to expose people to new music. I think some public radio stations do still play alternative/indie music. KCRW in California is a good public radio station that plays new music.

I have not listened to music radio in years. The only time I listen to radio is for news and documentaries like Morning Edition or All Things Considered. I hear about new music from blogs and magazines.
