The music is from America's "A horse with no name" a huge hit in late 1972. The lyrics have only been slightly modified from this.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Sorry, but no:

America

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la

After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la

Michael:
As I drove across on the highway
My jeep began to rock
I didn't know what to do so I stopped and got out
And looked down and noticed I got a flat

So I walked out, parked the car like sideways
So I can find what I can fix
I looked around there were no cars on the highway
I felt a strange feeling like a mist

I walked down towards the end of the road
And in the fog a woman appeared
She said don't you worry my friend I'll take care
Take my hand, I'll take you there

Oh
Take me to a place without no name
Take me to a place without no name
Take me to a place without no name
Take me to a place without no name

As she took me right through the fog
I see a beautiful city appear
Where kids are playin' and people are laughin' and smiling and
Nothing to fear fear

She said this is the place where no people have pain
With love and happiness
She turned around looked down at my eyes and started cryin'
She grabbed my hand, you got a friend

Oh
Take me to a place without no name
Yeah

She started likin' me kissin' me and huggin' me
She didn't really, really want me to leave
She showed me places I've never seen things I've never done
This really looks like a lotta fun

I seen the grass and the sky and the birds
And the flowers surrounded by the trees
This place is filled with love and happiness
How in the world could I wanna leave

So then I went in my pocket took my wallet on out
With my pictures of my family and girl
This is the place that you choose to be with me
When you thought you could be in another world

Oh
Take me to a place without no name
La la la
A place without no name
La la la

A place without no name (La, la, la)

Totally different lyrics.

The lyrics are more or less completely different. There's not even any horsies in Michael Jackson's version. I never liked the original but I like MJ's interpretation.

One thing that really bugs me about the Michael one is the "without no name" part. Its a double negative. What he's really saying is that the place DOES have a name.

Yes. I love Michael's lyrics. I know I'm a bit biased and while I like both songs, I have to say I find the original lyrics a bit bland and can't find no real meaning in it. Michael's are mysterious and paint a picture. And I love his singing on the bridge.

Isn't that some form of slang though? "We don't need no education" is also a famous example. Or "I can't get no sleep".

It's a wonderful song, love it but as far as i am concerned, Michael didn't write these lyrics, it was the producer Dr. Freeze.

Well, since both are credited as writers and the music was already written, both had to be contributing to the lyrics.

Okay, but I still think they both sound very similar. You mention bias, I guess u are like I am on the MJJ community, I am always mentioning Prince or Prince equivalents in nearly every post oevr there. Still with 1000 points and 215 thank yous, I hardly think they want to get rid of me too soon.

Even my name is Prince related I am MJPrince1976 there. I nearly got ethered for suggesting Prince's voice is much better than Michael's.

You really think that? I mean to each is own. But Mj is a vastly superior singer. Yes prince has a bigger range and better falssetto (This is where his singing soars) But he cant really belt out a tune in his chest voice all that much like mj or the great soul singers ala stevie wonder, marvin gaye, aretha. His range in chest voice is fairly small. And than when it comes to injecting emotion into a lyric no one can see Mj there. I believe thats one of the reason his music translates so well all over the world. His voice is ethereal and drenched in emotion. That being said prince is a good singer as well but mjs in a different league I believe even prince would agree begrudgingly.

That is entirely subjective as to who is the better singer. Of course on MJ's forum they are going to say MJ and on Prince's they will say Prince, lol! They both sing great IMO and have their own unique style. I don't get all the comparisons between these two when it comes to their music anyways. I understand they were both on top of their game in the eighties and had the same influences in common, both took MTV by storm, both black and are the same age, but that is where it stops. Musical wise, they couldn't be anymore different, polar opposites. Michael was the more commerical one, whereas Prince was the more artistic one. What is really annoying is that I have heard some MJ fans love to always say MJ is better because, he is the king of pop, sold more records and all the awards he has won. Really? Is that all they can think about? Do they even listen to the music and notice it is a stark contrast and cannot be compared? There is more to MJ than him winning awards and selling lots of records. To some it is like they feel threatened by Prince or something. So silly! I love them both and their music was a huge part of my growing up years.

I said to each is own and just gave my opinion. I like them both too equally but these two have alot in common and alot of differences. I always viewed them as two sides of the same coin. If you were to boil them down to their core talents it would be prince songwriting and musicanship and it would be michael singing and dance. They did other things well but they excelled in these two areas respectively. Its a shame they didnt collaberate they would blown lennon and mccartney out of the water like nothing. And I have a feeling it had to do with ego between the both of them but oh well.

Oh yes, a collaboration would've been awesome! I think they were supposed to duet on "Bad" but it just didn't work out. Creative differences I guess. They both had a mutual respect for one another although the media created some sort of rivalry. They were both one of a kind artists that will never be duplicated that's for sure.

Michael Jackson Estate Sells Sony/ATV Music Publishing Business to Sony

anna headshotAnna Gaca // October 1, 2016

The estate of Michael Jackson has sold its 50 percent stake in Sony/ATV Music Publishing to the Sony Corporation for $750 million, giving Sony sole ownership, Billboard reports. Sony/ATV, which also controls EMI Music Publishing, is the world’s largest music publisher.

Jackson paid $47.5 million for the ATV catalogue in 1985, acquiring valuable copyrights that famously included most of the Beatles’ songs. The investment turned out to be a lucrative one for Jackson; Sony/ATV is valued at over $2 billion. The lower buyout price is the result of debt and other accounting in the two entities’ complicated co-ownership.

The buyout was first announced in March. With the $750 million, the Jackson estate is expected to be able to clear its debt and place money in a trust for Jackson’s beneficiaries, his three children. The estate still holds interests in a number of other music assets, including EMI Music Publishing, Jackson’s personal publishing company Mijac Music, and Jackson’s own master recording tapes.

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I just watched a video with John Landis. He's worked on something with Michael Jackson's estate and the "Thriller" video. It's due to come out sometime in 2017, although I have no idea of what it is. He wouldn't elaborate. I hope it's not a 3D bullshit thing. Remastered in a widescreen format would be cool. But that seems an easy go-to.

Thriller will be 35 late next year, so I predict a spring or summer release of whatever this project is. Landis described it as "spectacular". I'm curious!

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Could be another Thriller re-release on the way. And I'm just the kind of moron who'll buy it. Esepcially if there's any more unreleased songs on it. As for what John Landis is doing, I'd guess it will be something along the lines of a 3D remake or maybe a Thriller VR version.
