Beyoncé is (supposedly) set to open for the 2016 Video Music Awards according to a recent set-list leak!
The set-list leak also confirmed Rihanna would win the Vanguard award before it was announced, therefore we believe it is accurate.
Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman
Britney, Justin and Beyonce have all won it so if they can win it... I dont see why Rihanna can't.
I personally think none of them deserve the award.
They're basically giving it to any big name act now.
Kanye has influenced music more than any of the other names you mentioned and even when he got it last year, I thought it was a stretch. Either way, I doubt they're giving the award for artistic merit anymore, don't even know the last time they did.
Also, I noticed that MJ's name is once again not in the award's title.

Agree, it seems to be more of a marketing and promotional tool for MTV ratings. They try to get any big name on the show to draw more viewership. I agree, There is no merit behind the award at all. They actually added Michael's name back to the award's title after he died.

Plus they didn't really acknowledge that last year when Kayne got it. Its like they pick and choose to announce that it's the MJ Vanuguard Award.

Yuuuuuup presented by Taylor in 2015.....no MJ mentions.

I cant see the video, its not showing for me but that is shady that they would mention that is the MJ Vanguard award when Britney, Beyonce and JT receive it... but not for Kanye. Its sketchy that they had Taylor presenting the award to Kanye. Its pretty clear that MTV is a joke now and this award really has no meaning and is only used for ratings. This year Rihanna is receiving it and they are calling it the MV Vanguard award.

The irony in all of this is that MTV has not showed any music videos 24/7 since the 20th century. And yet, the same MTV is worry about lack of viewership for their VMAs show.

Just saying.
Considering that ratings have been steadily going down over the past few years, the VMA's aren't the pop culture spectacle they used to be.
Here's an article that perfectly sums up the VMA's now. Granted, this is from 2014 but overall, it speaks on the importance (or rather the lack of importance) of not just the VMA's but MTV as a whole in this day and age:

Very Ironic indeed.
I don't see the point in having the award show anymore.

I don't think "award shows" are as influential or significant overall when it comes to the popularity and marketing of todays stars. I would say overall, all award shows are at a all time low. Even when stars like Beyonce, Rihanna and Kanye are on the show the ratings are still very low. I think that speaks to award shows and the star power of today's stars. I was looking at the ratings of award shows including MTV, and the biggest ratings these shows have garnered in recent years was during the MJ tributes. I think its interesting that a decease 40 year veteran artist can receive more ratings for his tributes compared to today's living "super stars". I think its a combination of lack of relevance and star power. Also, it doesn't help that they give awards to the same people.

Agreed. It also doesn't help that there are so many of them now. We have the Grammys, the BBMAs, VMAs, YouTube Music Awards, the AMAs, the Soul Train Music Awards and doesn't country have 2 or 3 ceremonies dedicated to the genre? All of that is just for music...
The BBMAs have always been kinda pointless to me. It's not enough for an artist to be documented on the charts as the most popular but they have to win an award to show it? Makes no sense, the popularity speaks for itself. Apparently, the YTMAs only happen every other year for some reason (at least since its inception in 2013) but those are basically what the VMAs used to be (minus the pop culture significance, hype or credibility) so why do we still have the VMAs? MTV is MTV in name alone and has been for years so what's the purpose of the VMAs? The shock value isn't even shocking anymore; when Nicki called out Miley on the show last year, the first thing people asked was whether or not it was a real confrontation. The magic is gone.

Those shows used to be must see tv.....now they are I would rather watch old footage on YT like back in the day when Prince won everything eg. AMA's 1985

I made a topic on here not too long ago on this exact thing.
I wish these award shows could be either put on DVD or restored and made available for streaming online. There was an assortment of reasons (namely legal/ monetary ones) for why it would be hard to put award shows in their entirety on DVD but I don't see why they can't be streamed. It'll be a lot better than having to search the far ends of tbe internet just to find a shoddy clip of a performance or an artist accepting an award.

That's an awesome idea have it all archieved and available, and that way it would be easier to search and watch.

Apart from Grammy [barring screwjobs of course!] & Billboard, all other music award shows in USA are afterthoughts.
What about the American Music Awards [AMAs]? Oh please! That one fell the hell off the moment Dick Clark allow Dick Clark Production to run without him and that was before his life threatening health problems force him to cut back from his own work schedule.

Yuuuuuup it use to be great where alot of winners showed up. eg AMA 1985 with Prince that alone was a show. Not like now

That would be lovely. Award shows are largely like sports games, once you've seen them once you really don't need to see them again but what about those of us who weren't alive to see these shows when they originally aired? I've searched high and low for the first edition of the VMAs from 1984 only to find nothing but bits and pieces, not even any performances outside of Madonna's can be found which is sad.
It's for the sake of posterity that award shows receive better preservation.

When's the last time the AMAs truly felt like a big deal? It does seem to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Oh yeah, I forgot about the iHeart Radio Music Awards.
So that's 8-10 annual music award shows. Something has got to go. [Edited 8/14/16 21:11pm]
For the first time since 2007, Britney Spears will perform at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. Spears’ new album drops two days before the VMAs air live from Madison Square Garden on Sunday, August 28 at 9p.
