1. Break a string on one - use the other neck.

.

2. They may be guitar and bass in one

.

3. Could be 6 string and 12 string necks or 8 string and 6 string neck etc.

.

4. They look cool.

.

5. They can show off the success of a great player

.

6. Perfect for songs like Guitar Boogie.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Unless they're of the "6 & 12 string guitar" and "guitar and bass" kind, and the songs performed actually require using them, being a clueless douche, basically.

Then again if it is all or show, why is it a crime. Ihave watched many music videos and concerts where there is one cat with like 8 or 9 guitars and he changes them every song and then the drummer has like 3 sets of drums and 30 pads, or the keyboard player has 2 or 3 stand alone synths and keyboards on 3 sides.

.

You don't need to playing them all at once or at all, but they make great decorations. Surely masses of instruments look great and can be useful if your main one breaks down in the middle of a song.

Jimmy Page uses it on the Majestic ....Stairway to Heaven

its a Gibson EDS-1275 semi hollow and introduced in the 1950s, around 1962 it evolved in style and remained in production till 68. each type carried 2 humbucking pickups for each neck, 4 knob controls all postioned under the lower 6 string section with a neck selector switch between the two guitars.

it provided great strenght and balance

only 110 were made of both types, Of course Jimmy Page made it infinatly famous!

the reason was to have 2 guitars in one and when Jimmy played Stairway Live he felt it reflected the pacing needed for the song and hed still be able to use the electric 12 string and the 6 string without swapping out guitars.

Jimmys solo on that guitar was a major highlight in the live performances. and the ability to instantly swith back to the electric 6 string that followed helped to ramp up the pacing he refers to.

other artists that used this doubleneck are:

steve howe of yes

charlie whitney of family

alex lifeson of rush

the guitar pictured is a 6 & 12 string. very good reason for a double neck if you need both guitars in one song. different tunings in the same song as well can be a good reason.

.

as for just being a clueless douche.... i would say that comment is clearly an example of being a clueless douche.
