Phil Collins' live performance of Sussudio at 1990 VMAs

Since it's VMA season, I thought it would be fitting to post this:

A great, engaging but overlooked performance from the 1990 edition of the Video Music Awards. Phil Colllins always knew how to put on a good show and this is no exception.

Never mind that "Sussudio" was 5 years old at the time of this performance lol

I think I saw Debbie Gibson in the audience. Foolish Beat was one of my favorites back then. smile

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It's easy to forget how ridiculously popular he was back then.

I have no clue.

An all around great performance but it was 5 years late.

This sounded cheesy straight out of the box. Instant cheese
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Well if it must be cheese, it's of the authentic sampler variety.

Yes, the song choice reminds me when Prince did album track "Emancipation" at the then very high profile Brit awards (well high profile in Britain). Maybe he thought that song would be pushed as a single, but I doubt it?

Anyway, shoulda done "Hang in long enough", as that was a single, and is of similar stock to "Sussudio".

Historically accurate! But they are just not JAMS like "Sussudio".

Good point. Another Day in Paradise was and is a much better song.

"Another Day in Paradise" being a better song has nothing to do with it. It simply would have been a better choice because it was a hit off of his latest album at the time. It would've made more sense to perform that than the 5 year old "Sussudio".
