Exactly! I've never cared for any of those singers. I know a lot of people like them as they are very popular, but I don't like it.

To me the most beautiful voice is someone like Karen Carpenter.

This actually was the first song I thought of when I listened to it. The song sounds like it has potential but is lacking in the chorus. I feel more lyrics and melody could be added. I do really like the melody though for a start and her vocals. She is a really good singer. She really has a theatrical voice. I wish she would stop chasing the "pop sound" and go the Janelle Monae route with her music. She seems to be very heavily inspired by Madonna and the 80's.

Her "theatrical" vocals is one of the main things that annoys me about her even though I like a few songs. I know that's what most people consider good singing. But to me it just sounds like screaming and shrieking. Maybe her voice is technically good but it is very grating to me. Hurts my head. There's no subtlety or real emotion to it, just shrieking at the top of your lungs

I don't think she is the greatest singer or a unique singer but she is a good singer and I base this on other songs and live performances Ive heard because before I never thought she could sing. By the way, I am not a fan of hers but I do like the new Lady Gaga much better. Over all, I personally don't care for any of the pop singers out now.

Gaga's releases are hit or miss for me, but generally speaking I'm a supporter. However, I'm not feeling this new single. I figured maybe it had to grow on me, but so far it hasn't. I'm curious what else she has up her sleeve, so I'll be on the lookout for the follow up singles and the album.

so basically, it took four people to write this song? eek

i guess we're perhaps warped about these things since we grew up on prince,
but many more artists i like write and record their own material.

it wouldn't seem so silly if the songs on radio today were much better. but at
most they are mediocre lol

jeez disbelief

anyway, despite all of that i still have a soft spot for gaga. i don't care about
her image or anything, i just like some of her songs a lot. when she gets it
right, she's really good.

4 people does not seem like a huge number of people to write a song. Yes, Prince wrote his songs completely by himself, but a lot of 80's songs were written by more than one person in a colloborative way, particularly bands. For example. Duran Duran wrote their hits together as a band not Simon by himself.

And just because you write with other people doesn't mean you aren't involved in writing your own material.

Sometimes it's good to have feedback from other people instead of doing everything in a self contained manner, which can lead to self indulgent music.

I think it's more a matter of it taking 4 people to write a barely 3 minute song that is 60-70% chorus.

Haven't pop songs always been 3 to 4 minutes long and have repetitive elements though?

But I do agree with you it does seem a bit repetitive even by the standard of pop songs and seems to missing a verse or a bride.

exactly.

although i have to agree with glindathegood as well, about bands writing songs and such.
i guess it's not THAT different to be a solo act and have a few people over in the studio to
help bounce ideas of or to contribute their own ideas and production skills etc.

I'm not saying most pop songs aren't structured to be repetitive but this one in particular is shorter than usual yet the chorus makes up almost all of the songs lyrics.

I got nothing against more than 1 writer or someone other than the artist penning a song but when you got multiple writers working together on a single track, you come to expect a little more than a song just over 2 minutes long with the chorus comprising most of the lyrics. It could be worse and Gaga could have 10-20 writers to a song like Beyonce had on Lemonade but still.

I think for me when it comes to songwriting. The problem with today's pop singers is that the songs are usually already in their completed form by the time the pop singer receives it. They don't participate in the song making process and like Motown said, the song that took 10 songwriters to write is usually a repetitive verse/chorus looped that is typically uninspiring and uncreative. So while even during the 70s and 80s singers used more than 2 songwriters, the songs were at least very experimental and creative.

The 70s were known as the decade of the singer-songwriter, especially for women after the huge success of Carol King's album Tapestry. It was the biggest selling album in pop music history--U.S--until Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack came along.

That's very true too! Pop singers back in the day were real artists and songwriters and I think that is the main difference from today's generation of pop superstars.

The song is definitely getting a chance at radio. it is by far the most added song on TOP40 according to mediascan, so it will be up to the listeners to see if they sustain the song or not. Despite her drama, I think she is good for pop music as a contrast to all the look and soung alikes among the young women/girls who are dominating right now.

Like, I am trying to figure out who wrote which part, because there are barely four elements to this short half-song.

This song from Gaga is awful. 2016 has got to be the worst year for pop music. 4 songwriters and this is all they can come up with....unbelievable!

2016 has been bland and largely uneventful with few big name releases and a sparse amount of must-listen quality albums and songs but not the worst year for pop music overall.

If any year is to be looked down upon as the worst year for pop music, look no further than 2014. Terrible year.

I thought that Joanne was her own middle name. I don't follow her that closely but I thought the concept was this is supposed a more intimate personal album getting to know the real person, rather than the over the top artificial persona that is "Lady Gaga" thus naming the album after her real name. That would make a lot more sense than naming if after your dead aunt. But maybe then I'm thinking too logically, which Gaga doesn't seem to do.
