You don't give a release date, not stick to it and then play the "you can't rush art/ perfection" card when people take you to task for it.

That's some steaming bull if there ever was any.

IKR????

This sounds like a royalty dispute dressed up with pretentious artsy babble.

Exactly.

If the art was finished by the time you promised it, there would be no need to rush. Maybe Frank shouldn't have suddenly announced such a close release date if he knew the album wasn't going to be finished in time.

But did Frank himself ever give a date for the album?

No, his manager did but this still falls back on him.

Apparently he is releasing two albums. The first one is a visual album entitled "Endless", was released last night. The second one is coming this weekend apparently...

Yeah, in his prime. Score one for the steakfinger! Nicely done.

Let's see if the results are the same.

blonde is very, very good! i think it will rub a lot of people the wrong way. it's a real left turn. it's very abstract, very experimental, very low-key. most of the songs don't have drums. great impressionistic lyrics. i personally enjoyed it a lot. as far as albums as career moves and follow ups to debuts, it reminds me of what Terence Trent D'Arby did with Neither Fish Nor Flesh. Give it a listen

He'll never go over with the mainstream.

I think Rolling Stone even labeled it Avant-Garde Soul.

I hear the magazine is like a stream of consciousness of his influences which, dare I say it, screams "hipster" to me. He's got an indy streak and black-nerd backpack sensibilities.

So the whole round of I-just-don't-get-it, he's-way-overrated and "he sucks" critiques will be battling for top billing for the rest of the year, when there's plenty of mainstream acts that everyone loves like Drake and Beyonce to satisfy your palete if you so desire.

Blond is a very minimalistic approach, so not everyone is going to like it. I have to listen to it again to form a better opinion of it, but Frank's music, especially his voice, is so visceral that it can be physically nauseating no joke. So I have to be in a good place mentally and emotionally to hear it again. I will say that Solo, White Ferrari, and Seigfried stand out the most, with Seigfried being my favorite. FYI, when Prince passed away, Frank wrote a sweet letter praising Prince for doing things his way without fear of being judged and he claimed "When You Were Mine" is not just his favorite Prince song, but his favorite song of all time praising the genius of the song's simplicity. He posted it on tumblr, the only social media outlet he uses http://frankocean.tumblr....ecause-its

Ocean's written tribute to Prince was beautiful. I wonder if he did anything subtle or under the surface to honor P on his new music?

Quick question: I'm too old to sit in front of a screen to watch a 40 minutes long music video. Is the music in the visual album different from the one in Blond? And if so, can we get the music separately from the video?

Frank Ocean's album releases barely get a mention in major gay publications, sprouting #gaymediasowhite to go viral:

'Blonde' Bombshell: Frank Ocean Album Was Independently Released After Star Left Label,
Singer Now Set For Huge Pay Day

The singer’s name has been a staple in the music sphere this week following the unannounced release of two albums – visual LP ‘Endless’ and sophomore effort ‘Blonde.’

Per projections, the latter is on course to not only open at #1 on the Billboard 200, but double the sales of its predecessor (2012’s ‘Channel Orange’) in the process.

Hits Daily Double report that ‘Blonde’ was actually rolled out as an independent release via Ocean’s Boys Don’t Cry label. Distribution was handled by Fresh Produce.

Intriguingly, ‘Endless’ apparently fulfilled the singer’s contractual obligation to Universal Music (to whom he was signed by way of Def Jam).

The gag (#NoKeKe) is that he’ll now reap an estimated 70% of the revenue from sales and streams, rather than the 20% of 70% (specifically 14%) that he would be entitled to on a major label.

So with sales strong and streams forecast to top 75 million on Apple Music alone, Ocean is swimming to more wins than one!

I absolutely love both Endless and Blond. Beautiful albums. Have listed to nothing but these albums since the weekend.

But I can see how it's not for everyone.

I am glad, tho, to see the mostly positive reactions from his younger fans. Frank is expanding their palettes.

I think folks who...

are fans of James Blake
like Bon Iver
are Radiohead fans
love Sufjan Stevens
are partial to John Mayer's post-Continuum work
have Aphex Twin and Autechre CDs in their collection
appreciate what Drake and Kanye do
etc.

...will love this shit.

I really don't hear too many traditional soul/r&b references in these albums.

And he kept everything so raw and sparse.

I don't see any of Frank's contemporaries even being capable of making something like this.

Frank is on some other shit.

It's a waste of time visually yes, if you just play the music alone and do other work while listening then you're OK. From first impressions, Blonde is the better album of the two although I like the way he twisted At Your Best You Are Love more towards Aaliyah's version than The Isley Brothers.

I don't want to live in a world with no drums. They watered them down enough.

He pulled a Prince '96. Good for him.

I haven't heard Endless, but did buy Blonde.

Blonde , on first listen, is a hit-and-miss affair. Sounds like he was going for a good kid, m.A.Ad. city -meets- Sea Change kind of vibe. Maybe I'll like it more with a few more spins.

He's got a promising career ahead of him.

It's certainly not 'easy' to listen, it's taking me a few spins to get into it... (talking about Blonde, I haven't listened to Endless yet).
