George Clintons 80s solo albums Are they worth getting? I have the Greatest Hits, with songs like Quickie, Atomic Dog, R&B Skeletons In The Closet and Last Dance.... So many great tracks... But are the 80s albums (Capitol era) worth tracking down? Some of them are quite hard to track down.... |

Sure, they're worth getting, but they're a bit short and uneven. Expect the same type of "value for money" you'd get when buying a Prince protege album from the 80s. | |

By all means skip "The Cinderella Theory". One of the worst joints he's ever done..P couldn't even save that. Listened to it once and promptly put it away. | |

No it was not GC's best, but I believe to the contrary that he was working within the box of Prince's disciplined process which limited his own, hence the final sub-par result. You can't place G. Clinton in a box. | |

I thought that "Tweakin'" and "Why Should I Dog U Out" were highlights!

You also have to remember he was in a hell of a financial bind at that time and he was trying to play it "safe." This is the closest he could come. The outcome is by no means outstanding but...hell he did what he did for a reason.

Cinderella Theory is not great.
Computer Games, very good.

Computer Games is excellent, if only for that 12 minute monster-of-jam Loopzilla. And Atomic Dog of course, but the album also has a few lighthearted pop tunes where you can hear Junie Morrison's influence. A must have!
You Shouldn't Nuff Bit Fish is also good, especially the weird title track. R&B Skeletons isn't really a favorite of mine. I agree about the two Paisley Park albums, but if you like both Prince and Clinton, you'd still want to hear them. And Martial Law and Paint the White House Black are as Germanegro said, social/political commentary like only George can do it! And this came out twenty years before there actually was a black man in th White House! George the prophet... Oh and another word of advice: buy them on vinyl!!! Like a previous poster kinda said, the quality of the music on the solo joints are hit and miss at best. I like some of Computer Games, some of Some of My Best Jokes, and some of R & B Skeletons...and that's about all.

all of the above are worth getting. Used to bump them all the time. Get Computer Games/etc on vinyl so you can scope the cartoon artwork. Great stuff open yo mind, the entire universe you'll find

I dig them all except Cinderella Theory. That was a HUGE disappointment. The side with Nubian Nut, Quickie and Last Dance is an all-time great first half. If you've got funk, you've got style. | |

Regarding the Cinderella Theory: I always had the impression that this album was already mostly finished prior to George signed at Paisley Park. It has the same "quality" as "George Clinton presents our gang funky", my least favourite P-Funk album. Sheeeit, GC's 80's output kept me going thru (aside from the Prince camp) what was a mostly placebo decade music-wise.
I mean, it was like he was throwing us a bone or two. First time I heard Bullet Proof I was through, just done. That track was banging like nobody's business back then. I flat wore the grooves off that album summer 85. Bodyguard, Thrashin'. There is supposed to be a 12" mix on Bodyguard somewheres. Dolby's Cube was pretty funky too, Well Red which he produced. Get the Jimmy G and INC Thang Band albums. And pick up the GC-produced Eramus Hall record Go Head if you can find it. From about 84 I think. I always thought R&B Skeletons came off sounding kinda thin, but to this day I think he was in some weird way trying to mirror the actual concept of the record thru its sound. And don't sleep on Urban Dancefloor Gurillas either. I think this may be the most polished production of any of his records. This is when the whole P-Funk All Stars concept starts to become crystallized for the road, with outstanding players like Dennis Chambers and Rodney Skeet Curtis. [Edited 8/15/16 17:19pm] | |
