VH1 To Produce A Biopic On R&B Group Jodeci?

Jodeci, one of the most popular male R&B vocal bands of the 1990s, might be the subject of an upcoming biopic focusing on the quartet. One of the members of the group vaguely suggested that VH1 is producing a behind the scenes film but nothing has been set in stone just yet.

As reported by VIBE, group member Mr. Dalvin posted up a tweet last month that seems to hint at a Jodeci biopic to be produced by the major cable network. Although VH1 officials are not confirming the movie, it wouldn’t be the first time the network has taken a beloved R&B group from that era and gave them the biopic treatment.

“#JODECI FANS #FollowMe 4 your ALL ACCESS PASS into the Making of the@VH1 #JODECI MOVIE,” read a tweet from June 18 from Mr. Dalvin.

The so-called “Bad Boys of R&B” burst onto the scene in 1991 with their Uptown/MCA debut, Forever My Lady, under the tutelage of Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs when he was still an intern at Andre Harrell’s label. Their debut album went on to go triple platinum.

Cedric, better known as K-Ci, and Joel, better known as Jo-Jo, Hailey are brothers from Charlotte, N.C. Donald, aka DeVante Swing, and Dalvin DeGrate are brothers from Hampton, Va.

After some inner troubles with the group, there was a split and K-Ci and Jo-Jo formed a duo while scoring several top-charting hits, including crossing over into the pop charts. The group reunited in 2014 and released their fourth studio album, The Past, Present, And Future in 2015.

Loved Jodeci (at least those first 3 albums), but I'm kind of laughing at this. As with anything, if it's in the right hands, It could interesting. I don't know how necessary it is, as their story is pretty "normal" in the music world - rise quickly, money, partying and drugs, inner-group tensions, split, semi-runion. I'm really not trying to be cynical. It could be good, but I'm not that positive that it will be.

They must need money. There is no reason to do this as the above poster said. Very typical story. I hear Dalvin is heading this. Funny as he is the least important member of the group. I'd rather hear Devante's perspective.

Exactly. He's the most interesting member of the group; and I'd love to hear him recount his
trek to Paisley Park to join Prince's band.

I love Jodeci. One of the best male group of the 90's. Lately a lot of artists have been conducting biopics. IMO, not every celebrity needs a bio pic. Biopics imo are for artists/celebrities who who were unique and lived interesting lives like a Prince, MJ, etc.

I hope no one is alluding to Jodeci not deserving a "biopic". That would be a disastrous
assessment of their importance to R&B during the 90s. Imitation is the highest form of
flattery and we can easily count on two hands how many "ruff n' tuff" R&B groups were
birthed due to Forever My Lady and Diary of a Mad Band.

DeVante Swing is the originator, or one of them, of the southern version of "new jack swing"
that gave us the likes of Timbaland and Missy Elliott, which, as we all know, opened the door
for the Neptunes. All of this can be tied right back to not only Teddy Riley, but to DeVante
Swing too!

They had a #1 R&B album last year after a ten year hiatus - I don't think this idea is just
washed up!

It is so crazy that legendary artists like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder don't have biopics,yet many of these lesser artists from the 90s do

The Marvin Gaye family seems to be too litigious to let a movie be made that has to tell about the shameful legal family argument that resulted in his death.

Also, Stevie Wonder is still here! I am always surprised when a biopic is done while the person is still living.

You better Preach...I see everyone's point as far as Bio-pics Galore...But as Black Folks we can't complain about not seeing our people Celebrated then complain when we we're being celebrated "too much"...I mean, we can't have it both ways...It's alright to complain if the Bio-pic is a hot mess...

Personally I'm not all that much a fan of biopics, I'd prefer a nice, indepth, 2 hour or so documentary covering the work of Jodeci instead. Another biopic with amateur actors, poor writing and cheap producing makes the idea watered down.
