JOHNNY CASH IS BACK I was watching VH1 and they aired this new video by Johnny Cash, and I must say, I was completely blown away! The video pretty much is retrospective piece that covers Johnny's career. However the song is new. It is so different, so alternative, I was shocked that this old country music crooner had it in him. I have always wanted to get into his music anyway. Mainly, because of his stance on civil rights and the prison system. In addition he is a talented musician.

I haven't seen the video, but I am assuming that it is for his cover of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" as I heard this was the single. I've heard the album (The Man Comes Around), and often I couldn't stop laughing. My mom thinks it real good, but I couldn't take it seriously. His take on "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode is paticularly hilarious.

Same here. I read somewhere this video being described as Johnny's having written his own obituary. When you think of it that way as you watch it, the imagery is even more touching and sad.

anyone have the album? how is it? really thinking of getting this. i finally found this video online... it left me feeling the same way... i just sat there and stared at my monitor in silence... the second time i watched it, i had that feeling like i could get teary-eyed, but it ever happened... the album is great... however, i would get the version they just re-released with the bonus dvd of "hurt"... it just came out this past tuesday... best buy has it for only $14... funny thing is, i don't think "hurt" is the best song on it... it's close, maybe even 2nd or 3rd... but i think "the man comes around" (which cash actually wrote) is my favorite... Big Iron and Wichita Linemen, i think.

This topic is back, too, because I just got the American IV: The Man Comes Around album. Seriously powerful stuff.
It's true, "Hurt" isn't anywhere near the best song on the album. "I Hung My Head," a Sting cover, is great, and so is "Give My Love To Rose." The title track is amazing. I've listened to the entire thing about a dozen times this week. Not that he needs it, but there are guest spots from Fiona Apple, Nick Cave, Don Henley, John Frusciante, and some of the Heartbreakers playing a lot of the record. And I didn't know about the DVD when I bought it - at Best Buy. I didn't see any copies with any bonus DVDs or bonus tracks. I did, however, find this great audio interview by Alan Light (formerly of SPIN) here: http://www.islandmercury....e/Cash.htm The transcript of the interview: http://www.americanalive....shview.htm In the interview, he describes "Hurt" as an "anti-drug" song. Johnny Cash is the fucking man!!! He and Willie completely rule! If you dig Cash's recent stuff, check out Willie's The Great Divide. Brilliant stuff. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
