Some in Prince’s inner circle claimed that the album seemed to ape his style, and Prince addressed it at a post-Emmys party performance in 2007, announcing to the crowd, “For whoever is claiming that they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!”

Timberlake responded by mocking Prince’s height while accepting a Golden Globe on his behalf, before dissing Prince on the Timbaland track “Give It to Me,” with Timberlake singing:

“Could you speak up and stop mu-mumbling, I don’t think you came in clear / When you’re sittin’ on the top, it’s hard to hear you from way up hear / Now I saw you tryin’ to act cute on TV, ‘Just let me clear the air…’ / We missed you on the charts last week, damn, that’s right you wasn’t there / Now if se-sexy never left, then why’s everybody on my shi-i-it / Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it / So if you see us in the club, go on and walk the other way / Cause our run will never be over, not at least until we say.”

For those keeping score at home, the verse was clearly aimed first at Janet Jackson, with the “Just let me clear the air…” referencing her interview with Oprah blaming Timberlake for the Super Bowl snafu and the “missed you on the charts” bit mocking Janet’s recent album 20 Y.O., which only sold about 655,000 copies in the U.S. And the “now if se-sexy never left” jab and the remaining lines target Prince.

Damn forgot about this.

Good grief this is all nonsense. Neither one were seriously dissing each other. And read JT's Instagram post after P died. One of the more heartfelt tributes. Leave it to the media to make something out of nothing.

I'm sure Prince liked his own new releases though and we could probably come up with a few more he didn't mind. biggrin

Don't know how serious they were about the dissing, but I wouldn't start hating JT over it. I think it was more for the fun of it, at least between JT and Prince. They both have a great sense of humour.

Had.. Argh.. Still manage to forget once in a while. sad

I agree. Here is the other pt......It looks like a feud actually IS starting to bubble between Justin Timberlake and Prince.
Our clever colleague, CJ, who writes for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, says SOME people think Justin’s new CD apes Prince’s style. At an Emmys party Prince announced “For whoever is claiming that they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!” And who can forget Justin at the Golden Globes, squatting in front of the microphone to imitate his tiny rival. Looks like Justin really RESENTS those comparisons between his CD and Prince’s music. He and Nelly Furtado came out with the diss song “Give it to Me” in which he mocks Prince’s mumbling, and jokes “We missed you on the charts last week.” (Justin’s CD is outselling Prince’s 3121 by a MILE. ) The ball is in Prince’s court.

He he.. Impossible to say for sure, obviously, but I have a feeling that Prince actually really enjoyed the fact that there was at least one person who wasn't just awestruck. cool

Nah....it was some playful fun between the two played out to the fans

Prince liked a little banter...he used to do it with Morris alot

JT, has been consistent in his love for Prince

I remember him even saying something along the lines of...Prince is so good, I even took his NPG drummer John Blackwell (2007 tour)

Prince was a proper mischevious joker - and he loved it!

Agree JT has nothing but love for Prince and always had.

Actually wasnt it like 3-4 NPG members that played on JT's tour?

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

On the FutureSex/LoveShow tour, Mike Scott was on guitar, and John Blackwell played drums. Rose Royce's Terry Santiel was on percussion (but he's played with a lot of folks).

JT also straight up jacked shit from"Sexy Dancer", "Sexy sexy sexy work that body...". He even said "Lemme see ya walk", then followed it with a damn near duplicate synth hook that The Time itself probably played at some point. His live arrangements pulled a lot from Minneapolis sound.

It's clear, also, on FutureSex/LoveSounds. It's a really good album, except maybe 1 or 2 tracks. There used to be a rumor that "Until The End Of Time" had a slowed down sample of the drums from "The Beautiful Ones", but that proved to be untrue. What was true was his use of a Linn drum machine. (The drum track is the only interesting thing about that song, by the way.)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

So hypocritical. When you get Timbaland and Pharrell, your music is going to sell. Everywhere. To everyone.

If anyone has a beef with JT, they should have a beef with his producers. And if folks want to hate on him for hiring good musicians, then they're fucking hypocrites.

Prince stole Sheila E's entire band (it seemed like). Erykah and Maxwell grabbed up a lot of Meshell Ndegeocello's band. Artists do it all of the time. They want to sound good, so they hire the best musicians. If JT went to a Prince show -- and Prince later let all of those musicians go? He'd be an idiot not to hire them if they made his band better. It only showed the true weakness of Prince's legacy. Fuck having a real drummer, I'm going to get one of the gameboyz again. Fuck hiring a real rapper, I've got the gameboyz for that.

All of JT's, Ginuwine's, Aaliyah's music sounds the same. Imagine any of those 3 singing any of those 3's songs that are produced by Timbo. Just hating on one, when all 3 are doing the same thing -- paying Timbo to sound that way -- is hilarious.

Where's Timbo and Pharrell's hate? Agreeing to sell their music to white folks! That's never happened before in the history of music! OH NOES!

Yah...and he even nabbed that from "Adore" lol

I can imagine them messing with each other at some party...and then saying let's play this out on wax

That Hollywood article is sensational nonsense...written by people who live in an exaggerated world...locked out from the talented people they follow

Nothing against you, C1 but . . .

When Black American emcees stop appropriating Chinese culture (kung fu flicks); when Black
Americans stop wearing hair weaves made in Asia in an attempt to appropriate European forms
of beauty; when Black Americans stop appropriating "African" and "Arabic" names for their chil-
dren (our identities are more complex than slapping an "African" name onto our childrens' birth
certificate and wearing "African" prints, and daishikis), and stop appropriating "African" holidays
(Kwanzaa); and stop appropriating Christianity (introduced to us by slave masters), then I'll care
about the heat Justin Timberlake received about appropriating Black American culture. Further-
more: when a segment of Black America (The Trap Generation) wakes up from its nihilistic slum-
bers, then I'll care about this. Until then, Black America Twitter-ers screamin' and hollerin' about
this goofy white boy (and his foine ass wife with the Oakland booty) liking Black American culture -
JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE ON THIS PLANET DOES WHO LOVES and CONSUMES AMERICAN POP
CULTURE - should shut the fuck up. Black America, if it is a monolith, needs to stop actin' like it
doesn't appropriate other cultures either.

I'm no huge fan of JT...although he clearly has talent and from what I have seen of him, appears a pretty stand up chap

How ironic that in an awards ceremony that was based around the celebration of one of the most universal artists of all time - he is getting dogged out...

-

Pity nobody covered either "Controversy" or "Uptown"

-

"Am I black or white?
Am I straight or gay? Controversy
Do I believe in God?
Do I believe in me?

Some people wanna die
So they can be free
I said life is just a game
We're all just the same
Do you wanna play?"

or

"Now where I come from
We don't let society
Tell us how it's supposed to be
Our clothes, our hair
We don't care
It's all about being there
Everybody's going Uptown
That's where I wanna be
Uptown
Set your mind free...

Good times were rolling
White, Black, Puerto Rican
Everybody just a-freakin'
Good times were rolling"

The clues are there folks...in the music wink
