Another point to remember with regards to keeping dust off your vinyl is how you store it. Keep any pets away from it, dont stack them on the floor, I use poly outer sleeves too, the ones with a re-sealable flap are the best imo. You can get packs of 10, 20, 50, 100 etc for not a lot of money.

Thanks!!

Totally agree with this. Cats tend to use records as a damn scratching post sometimes. The poly bags will help. We buy ones, that don't have the flap, but are really sturdy for about $9 per 100. For me, I don't like the ring that wears into the cover, so I remove the record (in the sleeve), and put it in the poly bag, as well as the cover. Just separate the two. It's also easier when you can just reach in and grab the record, without removing the cover every time. I just put the sleeve/record behind the cover.

Regarding that Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. Those are pretty and all, but (and people might argue this) I would almost always recommend a direct drive, not a belt drive. Belts wear out, stretch, change structure due to heat, humidity or cold, and can be tough to replace (depending on the design of the turntable). Direct drive motors are geared right to the turntable itself. For me, it's easier to fine tune the speed.

I'm a big proponent of a nice pad for the turntable, too. While most turntables have a nice layer of rubber on them, a good pad cushions and avoids scuffs, etc. (Of course, so does handling with care.) I have a couple I got from Daptone Records. Nothing fancy, but they do the trick.

And yes, keep the dust off and get something that removes the static. That can cause a lot of issues when you play them.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

When you say pad, do you mean like cork mats for the platter? Or feet for the whole turntable?

Any suggestions on what to get to remove static?

That.

One of those cleaners will help remove static. Check the description for that.

Try the Vinyl eyez channel on Youtube, hosted by a guy called Jared, really informative and easy without that vinyl pretence.

.

One piece of advice, do not buy a Crosley Cruiser or any other Crosley look alike turntable, avoid anything that has USB in it. I made that mistake and are paying for it.

.

You need a different needle for 78s as well.

.

Wait a few months before buying any Prince vinyl as the wrekka stows have jacked their prices up after his death, in a few months they will come down. Vinyl is a lot of fun, as I type this I am spinning an old Elton John album and Bennie and the Jets is playing and it sounds dope. Vinyl is magical to me, I was obsessed with turntables since I was a kid and my parents gave me plenty of them to pull apart and look at them, play records (Never hard to find, especially 78s) and I love watching that label spin around and around.

I saw a post on Facebook a month or so ago, where a record store put up a sign about Crosley record players. They said they would not guarantee any record that any customer bought who took it home and played it on a Crosley product. It was a laundry list of reasons, and frankly I couldn't have agreed more.

A decent slipmat and isolation feet for your turntable can help reduce vibration and improve bass if you're that way inclined.

Most cleaning brushes and other vinyl cleaners will help with static. I would also recommend you buy anti static inner record sleeves for your records, they cost not a lot of money. Nagaoka make good ones, they actually fit (mostly) into the inner sleeve of the album if it has one.

Hahaha. That's funny! BUT Crosley actually makes a decent turntable now. It's basically a rebadged Pro-Ject Debut.....

I'm with you on that! I have one too. I used to use it along with a vacuum attachment to suck off the cleaning fluid after I was done but after a while it just became too much, especially when I started buying larger collections from yard/estate sales. I use it every once in a while when I find a record that needs a really good cleaning. I typically just use my "used record" turntable instead and don't worry about it.

One of the things I love to do: go on a vinyl shopping day,buy alot of used records, come home and have a "cleaning session" with this machine biggrin I really enjoy this experience.

I´ve noticed that the country of origin also plays a part when it comes to sound. For instance, German vinyl sounds pretty good and is of great quality but American pressings, at least in the past, sounded a little bit louder, and British vinyl also sounds slightly different...clearer, maybe? Hard to describe it. At least that´s what I noticed in the past. And Japanese vinyl and CDs often sound much better than any other source.

Be careful and choose your vinyl cleaning detergent wisely. Some are great, but some can ruin the sound of vinyl to some extent.

I did! I bought a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC. And a ton of Prince on vinyl. It's amazing!
