How would you describe the sound of The Police?

Reggae rock? Rock? Soft rock? Bit of here and there?

We all know Sting is a freak of talent and he basically sang every genre of popular music that exists (From jazz all the way to Arabic Eastern music)

To put it in other words, what distinguishes The Police from The Clash, or The Smiths? What particularity would you attribute to their music?

The Police were the first band I really loved, so I'll give it a shot.

At their roots, they were a straight-ahead rock band heavily influenced by punk and ska, and incorporated reggae/world music into their later music. The Police had an inimitable, sometimes combustible, sound and style. I think what distinguished them from their peers was Sting's songwriting, and frankly, they had better basslines than most other rock bands of their time.

I never got to see them in the early days when they were new and blowing up with every sound .. I can only imagine how badass their shows must have been then. I saw them once n it was the reunion show at Dodger Stadium with The Foo Fighters .. I dont know it was ok but it wasnt the early raging killer Police .. I have seen The Police Experience tribute band and they do what they do real well tribute wise .. Sometimes their shows are pretty cool. Energy, funk, those 3 dudes kill it, if you close your eyes n jus feel it n hear it its damn sexy. The Police were a fusion of most things musically.

That's a good question actually. The Police were able to do different genres all within one song too! take a song like Voices In My Headfor a good example. The guitar is very reggae, the bass is pure funk, and the drums are jazzy. All 3 members doing different genres on one song make for a really cool listen smile i guess the average person would label them New Wave or just rock.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

"Voices" was played on BLACK Radio in My hometown (Buffalo NY) on the radio (WBLK) back in the Day. And THAT is what attracted Me 2 The Police. Then when MTV and the Ghost In The Machine Album came out, I REALLY appreciated Them!!! I dare say that THESE Police are the only ones that some Black Folks like!!!!! #StingN'Em

nod Great interpretation. I'll add that not only were the basslines out of this world, but their percussion was off the charts. Stewart Copeland was a beast.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I see what you did there. lol
The first joint I dug by them was Don't Stand So Close To Me.
I remember my neighbor bought the Every Breath You Yake 45 and bought some music
over to make some tapes. The next day I listened to the Police 45 and flipped it
over and heard Murder By Numbers and was hooked and I stopped listening to Every Breath You Take. Murder By Numbers is one of their best numbers in my opinion and
of course the Synchronicity album is a great listen.
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

True indeed. As Guns mentioned, Zenyatta Mondatta had probably the best set of basslines I've ever heard in a rock album.

But in many ways, Ghost In The Machine was Stewart's album. From beginning to end, he dominated the sound. I mean, the last minute of "Every Little Thing" was fire!

Don't know how I missed this thread. Their sound was hard to describe..(like our boy P) it was a good mixture of everything...punk/rock/reggae/ska/pop/experimental...And the funny thing is that I discovered them on r&b radio. "Voices" was played non stop back then..at first I thought it was Black Uhuru or Third World, but when the DJ said; "That was The Police" my reaction?.. eek ....A lot of brothers I knew back then grooved on them...and the 3 of them were all great musicians.

I love "Voices Inside My Head". Here I am spinning it at a Halloween party:

Cool costume! This thread made me dig out all my old Police CD's..I liked what 702 did with "Voices". I was at a party one time and "Steelo" came on blaring through the speakers..After about 20 seconds in I yelled out; "That's the Police!!..They sampled that!!!"..People looked at me like I was crazy..they had no clue...BUT I KNEW!!

i had pretty much the same experience...i heard their music for awhile before i ever saw them...i remember being shocked that they were white...the reggae basslines...those sick single string rhythm guitar riffs...those loud ass funky drums...andy summers and stewart Copeland get so overlooked...

"andy summers and stewart Copeland get so overlooked"...This 100%. Stewart even put out some cool solo stuff where he played everything himself.

It was cleared and credited on the single and album though! Missy sounds so cool on it.
