Portland, OR singer-songwriter Sara Jackson-Holman cites Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, and Serge Gainsbourg as musical influences, all of which can be heard on her upcoming album Didn’t Go to the Party, which will be out September 16. Helping her achieve that cinematic sound was Jherek Bischoff who did the gorgeous string arrangements for the album. (He just released his own new album too.) We’ve got the premiere of “Run” from the LP, a lush, groovy track with those string arrangements on full display. Sara told us a little about the song:
I was really inspired by Serge Gainsborg-esque strings for this song (specifically from album Histoire de Melody Nelson). I wanted “Run” to feel like it could be in a soundtrack to a warm-hued 70s movie, or just a great song to drive to. When I wrote it, I had just gone through a break up and was feeling simultaneously emotionally raw, putting back the pieces of my life, but also buoyed by the love of all my best girlfriends. I spent the summer after my break up basking in these friendships, taking countless trips to the river, having sleepovers, themed parties, movie nights, full moon nights, so I think the song, while written as a romantic song, was inspired and colored by my feeling understood, grounded, and deeply satisfied in my connections with my girlfriends.

Sara’s only upcoming live show is at Portland’s Revolution Hall Roof Deck on August 5. You can check out Didn’t Go to the Party‘s artwork and tracklist, below.
