I started into jazz in my twenties, after my grandfather walked me through his huge collection. It took me years to get to Dinah, but I knew she was one of the great vocalists in the Golden Age(s) of jazz. She's got a global reach, and has for generations.

To my understanding, the question was "who are underated artists?" It was not, who was underated during their reign. Obviously, DW was and still is the greatest singer in the world. Nevertheless, in my opinion DW is currently underated. The only time I've heard her music to the masses was from a Hotell commerical that played "Relax max" The singer Amy Winehouse, took her style (she admitted that) and used it to make herself famous (I mean that in the most respectful way) Amy admitted that DW taught her how to sing.

True, to add though, in my opinion, underated has nothing to do with album sales or several decades of fan following. It's about presence in pop culture or overall so called releveancy . Think, MJ, Prince, Madonna, Mariah, Whitney. They all have a high rating. My point was NW and DW do not have that level of prescence. Not sure why, but thats why I considered them underated.

To me underrated also has to do with how the artist is acknowledge and perceived by the industry. Take for example, an artist like Janelle has never won a grammy but she is one of the best artists of he generation.

Well.... the problem is how the media puts her up so high. They act like her Lemonade is some grand Sign ''O'' The Times or Lovesexy type statement and Formation? sorry.... i don't think Beyonce gives a fuck about Black Lives Matters. They jump on this thing and act like she's a new black panther she has like 20 people write her fucking songs. And like 20 people who decide her wardrobe! i doubt that Bey thought of any of this.

And Bey always has to be the spotlight constantly always doing some bullshit. This is personally why i really can only stand people like P!nk in terms of pop stars. Pink releases an album and has a few hit singles. Goes away for a few years and there's no gossip or talk about her in the press. Then boom back again with an album then back to being quiet. I think you're misinterpreting the words "underrated" and "overrated." For example:

No one underestimates the abilities and talents of D'Angelo, Badu, J. Cole, etc. Instead, what
you really mean to say is that these artists are not as popular as they deserve to be, or not as
popular as you want them to be.

The same is true for those on your overrated list: they have some modicum of talent. What you
really mean to say is that they are too popular for your taste, or not as popular as they deserve
to be as portrayed by the media.

Regarding Beyonce: she's an attractive light skinned pop singer who has at least some modicum
of talent which means she is going to gather much exposure in our pop culture. Consider Spalding:
light skinned but working mostly outside of pop culture, so she doesn't get the same amount of
exposure even though we can argue that she's more talented than Beyonce. So, being an attractive
light skinned Black musician/recording artist working within the context of pop means you are going
to get more exposure than an attractive light skinned Black musician/recording artist working out-
side the context of pop. Like Hornsby said: that's just the way it is; and some things will never
change.

Regarding Prince and Michael Jackson ass kissing: Both artists were considered a genius. Beyonce
is not a genius nor does anyone consider her a genius. So, I disagree with the notion that Beyonce's
ass is more kissed than Prince's ass and Jackson's ass being kissed. For example: Jackson had
music videos premiered on regular TV broadcasting stations - that's ass kissing to the max.

media and by those working outside the mainstream media. What we are really saying here is
that we wish they were more popular than they are for their level of talent deserves more attention
than received by the mainstream media.

Nobody underestimates Raphael Saadiq's talent: we know the brother is a bad ass. He had his
hand involved with two of the most important R&B songs of the past twenty years: "Untitled (How
Does it Feel?)", and "Soul Sista." We are just chagrined by the lack of coverage he receives by
