For drawing a big audience to a TV special, Chaka isn't relevant and neither is Larry Graham or The Time and they never really were. They're not ratings bait like Madonna. The Billboard Awards is a mainstream program on a major network (ABC). It's not the Soul Train or BET Awards. You're taking the quote out of context for your thread title.

That's exactly the truth. It's not t hat they're not talented, or have their place in music history. But when has Sheila put out an album, and been on the charts? Or Chaka for that matter? "Oh, charts are irrelevant." Yes, well that is the BILLBOARD music awards. This is all about the charts. She was commenting on the state of the industry, not Chaka Khan's talent.

.

Perry's comments weren't directed at the artists named, but rather toward the idea of Madonna doing the tribute, and the why of it.

.

By the way, for those who are butthurt by saying "Who is Linda Perry?", you know damn well who she is, so stop. She had 4 Non Blonds, but she has also produced huge hits for P!NK, Christina Aguilera, Jewel, Courtney Love, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion, Blaque, Sugababes, Lillix, Robbie Williams, Melissa Etheridge, Sierra Swan, Solange Knowles, Gavin Rossdale, Juliette and the Licks, Lisa Marie Presley, Fischerspooner, Unwritten Law, L.P., Kelly Osbourne, James Blunt, Cheap Trick, Ben Jelen, Enrique Iglesias and Giusy Ferreri., KT Tunstall, and more and more and more. She's either written for, co-written, or produced hits for every single one of those people.

.

Remember how big "Beautiful" from Aguilera was? Perry song. Or her Back To Basics album with "Candyman" and "Ain't No Other Man"? Perry work. Shit, don't be obtuse on this, and don't shoot the messenger.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Likewise, I think it's entirely possible that a performance by a great act like Chaka Khan (or Stevie Wonder, or Lenny Kravitz, or other well-known Prince influencees/ers with some actual talent) could easily entertain those tuning-in for ten minutes - and I almost feel a little sorry for anyone who thinks it couldn't.

I never said anything about the entertainment value of Chaka Khan vs Madonna, but that Billboard/ABC picked a performer based on popularity. Madonna has sold way more than Chaka. Pretty much the purpose of Billboard is to rank the popularity of songs/albums. So I don't know why people are getting upset about who was chosen, when listing who's "relevant" to the majority is what Billboard magazine (and ratings for TV networks) has always been about. The main charts are the Hot 100 for songs and Top 200 for albums. The rest of the charts are sub-charts for niche audiences (.ig. dance music, jazz, adult R&B, country, classical, AC, modern rock, etc.). The term "Hot 100" does not refer to a specific genre like the others, that's why it's "pop music" short for popular music, which is what sells the most to mainstream USA. So of course they're going to choose someone they think is more of a draw. Today, Madonna's tours make more money than tours by The Time, Larry Graham, Shiela E & Chaka Khan put together. Look at the Original 7ven album Condensate, most people don't know it exists. But the videos from Madonna's most recent release has many millions of views. Recently Billboard has said they're going to use views on Youtube and other streaming sites as part of their criteria for their chart data. That so many views will be the equivalent of gold or platinum sales.

.

Whenever someone says an act is a "one hit wonder", then they're going by Billboard. When an act releases a Greatest Hits/#1's album, they're going by Billboard. In the thread about the Michel'le movie, people are talking about why is she getting a movie, she only has a few hits. So they're judging her relevancy by Billboard stastistics. Whenever a thread about the TV show Unsung gets started, some people say so and so is too popular to be "unsung". Well, it's pretty much the same thing as this. The makers of Unsung mostly chooses acts that will draw as many people as possible to watch it. They have to sell advertising time to businesses.

I get where you're coming from as far as Billboard stands itself so I'm okay
with it. If this were the AMA's I would have a different stance. As far as Madonna's popularity goes now I wouldn't know or care since I haven't been interested in anything she's done since the Dallas Austin produced single she had years ago. The only time I know new music from Madonna is coming out is if it's mentioned here. Black Radio hasn't played Madonna since 1986. The Prince tribute isn't going to take up the whole show so it could have been done with the Time, Sheila E., or Chaka. Hell look who the hosts for the show now. Ludicrous nor Ciara are relevant musically now according to Billboard charts so I don't buy into Linda's Hocus Pocus.

Cut out the nonsense. Not everybody is familiar with songwriters. Not everyone cares particularly when you're talking about youth. If she wrote songs for all those artists kudos. Of that list list I've only been interested in Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Blaque, and Solange for a hot minute. Celine Dion is a great singer
but I've never been moved to buy a cd from her. Some of those other artists most orgers here just don't care or talk about sparingly so it's not inconceivable that folks here ever heard of Linda Perry. You may not know who Linda Creed or Bobby
Martin is unless I post their list of hits. Not everyone that listens to music tracks the producer or songwriters. In fact there was a time the albums producer
were more popular than the artist and songwriter put together.

I finally watched the video. I like how Sheryl Underwood addressed it.
I'm not mad at Linda Perry but her statement about Chaka was misguided. Chaka may not be relevant as charts go today but she is still a big draw for r&b and she wouldn't have been unknown for that award show period. Hell she covered Prince I Feel For You which was a huge crossover record on the Billboard charts how is that not relevant. She's just like Maze and Frankie Beverly. Fuck around and wait until the last minute to get a ticket you will miss out. Damn Aisha Tyler went in did she. Why don't they get musicians (which Prince was all about) to do a proper tribute because Prince played like 17 different instruments while Madonna can barely play her own voice. lol Damn Aisha dropped the Mic!

this why I don't watch these shows for stunts like this

I have nothing at all against Madonna,

here work in the 80s up unto the album True Blue was stellar

but this goes to show how the luminaries from years past have been shafted and pushed aside in order for others to be hoisted through the lens of Pop orientation, and that's why music and entertainment overall has declined

The Grammys & the Billboard Awards are different though. The Grammys nominate veteran acts (like Steely Dan winning over Eminem) and Billboard nominate who's hot now. It's unlikely Billboard would have nominated Steely Dan in the first place as their album was nowhere near as popular as Eminem's. Also, unlike Sheila E and Chaka, Stevie has pretty much always crossed over, going all the way back to Fingertips. Stevie's 1970s and early 1980s albums sold well too. So he's more on the level with Madonna and Michael Jackson rather than The Time & Andre Cymone. Madonna is also nominated for a Billboard Award. Chaka, The Time, and Stevie aren't. So Madonna was probably already going to be there. Here's a list of nominees.

What's racist about it? It's true. Or have you not seen the programming on the 4 major networks? lol Look at the movies that make the most money in the US and the magazines generally carried in stores. How many Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Samoans, etc do you see on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC (or on the cover of Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and People)? Apu on The Simpsons? razz There's a reason Telemundo and Ebony & Latina magazines exist.

Who the hell said anything about the show being too white but you? lol
Most people had a problem with Linda Perry's comments versus Madonna performing the tribute. If the biggest thing was appealing to you guys favorite term mainstream why the hell are Ludicrous and Ciara hosting. When was the last time either had a big hit? And your message about Stevie: Are Black folks suppose to rejoice now as though we haven't seen Stevie perform on awards shows 1000 times over. Me as well as a lot of sports fans will be tuning into the NBA playoffs anyway so the Billboard awards are not RELEVANT to some us. Pun intended.
