Interesting article on the success of Huey Lewis and the News in 1984

In retrospect, it's an unsung accomplishment how in a year as stacked as 1984 with a record low of only 5 #1 charting albums by year's end, Sports is one of them.

The fact that such a comparatively mortal, down to earth group like HL&tN took on blockbuster names in the form of not only the 3 #1 acts of the year in Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Prince but the slew of other superstars at the time and managed to put a point on the board and become blockbuster names themselves is an incredible feat.

All I know is that I heard The Heart Of Rock n Roll, Heaven by Bryan Adams, and No Stoppin' Us by Ollie & Jerry constantly that summer. What's Love Got To Do With It and Sister Christian too. I remember the Solid Gold dancers dancing to this songs.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

"The Heart of Rock and Roll" is what forced Sports to the top of the charts that summer. Perfect timing as the Footloose soundtrack began to cool off then.

Colin Hay was on The Tonight Show a couple of months ago.

I don't get why people consider (ed) their music corny. They made danceable blue collar rock but apparently that's not edgy and hardcore enough for the average rock critic.
