Examples of opening acts who became bigger than their touring partner Probably the most prominent example of which would be Prince opening for Rick James during the latter's Fire It Up Tour. Any other examples?

Jackson 5 opening for Commodores though mj and Lionel eclipsed one another in 83' Usher and n sync opening for janet, at least in the 00s they were considered more popular sales wise in North America. But then again it's an unfair comparison cause of a generation gap in audiences

The best case I can think of, Tiffany started out as the headliner of her own tour with opening act New Kids On The Block. At some point in the tour, New Kids had gotten so huge, Tiffany started opening for them.
Lots of superstars did opening act tours early in their careers. Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkees, and the Who opening for Herman's Hermits, both hapened in 1967. Van Halen opening for Black Sabbath in 1978 was one of the things that broke them. Same with Metallica opening for Ozzy in 1985.

That was those Budweiser SuperFest shows. All the acts were headlining talent. Guy, Al B Sure, LeVert and Tony Toni Tone were on those shows too. PRINCE: Always and Forever
