CODY CHESTNUT - thoughts?

.

I'm on my first listen of this two disc set (which could have been shaved down to one - the first "song" on Vol 2 is him babbling into the mic, having a conversation, giggling & shit... what a way to start your album).

Some songs sound REALLY good to me (No One Will, The Seed, Serve This Royalty, more I can't remember the names of) & definitely worth checking out biggrin A few songs are utter unfinished sounding shit. I literally said to myself, "why does he expect anyone to want to hear this?"

He definitely likes to talk about his dick a lot :O not very creative w/ it, I wasn't expecting that. He also loves the word "bitch" confused Sometimes it's appropriate, sometimes he seems to throw it in there just b/c. I dunno, maybe it's jarring me b/c I didn't go into it expecting to hear so much of that from some guitar playing dude. I get myself ready for that kinda stuff when I wanna hear Rap, but w/ him I just wasn't ready.

Just wondered if anyone else had thoughts on this dude. If you haven't heard him yet, check him out. It's not your average cd that's out there & definitely worth a listen smile

edited to bring out more of the positive, hopefully smile

OOPS! lol I don't mean to make him sound bad at all - his stuff is definitely interesting & worth a listen. He did a remix (I guess) of his song "The Seed" with The Roots that's playing on video channels now. I'm not sure how long his album has been out but it's called The Headphone Masterpiece.

The copy I have is borrowed but I'll probably buy it - the good songs are really good IMO... smile

Also, don't know where he's from. The cd seems to be on a new label called Ready Set Go!, which I've never heard of. Maybe it's semi independent, which makes me even more intrigued biggrin

well..i have to say..i got 'the headphone masterpiece' by cody chesnutt...and it took me two days to get all the way through it...it's one of the most frustrating things i've ever listened to...

it seems he went out of his way to make it sound like a long demo...and it seems he's trying so hard to be 'artsy' that he can't complete a song...

even the song the roots ended up using doesn't sound as good here...he seems to sing the whole song slightly off key...

to me this is the type of collection you would want in a few years by an artist who is established already...it just sounds like a collection of outtakes and demos...

i think he has great potential..but next time i'm gonna have to be convinced before i purchase anything by him...

hmmm...i'm glad i have it cos like i said i think he's got a lot of potential...but...

i don't know if i'll ever listen to it again...you can hear something like 'michelle' though and tell that he could write songs...and sing...but for some reason he just doesn't...

as for songs worth having...i can't say yes, i gotta say almost..cos he starts one..and it has potential..and then it just stops...or he starts babbling...

i can't really recommend it...i say get the roots 'phrenology' instead..
wink

another problem is the production..like i said before it's almost like he was trying too hard to make it artsy or raw or something...cos even the complete tracks will have air noise or just a bad mix...i dunno..

Yea, "The Seed" in particular is overmodulated. Maybe it's just the bass & drums that are distorted but it sounds fucked up. And I like that song! sad

Live this guy kicks ass, but his double CD isn't grabbing me. It was too all over the place for me. I agree when someone said he has potential. Hopefully he puts it down next album.

UptownDeb

There was an article about him in the A&E section of the NY Times months ago. I'd set it aside but never read it. sad

Anyway, with a name like that, dude sounds like he should be on the country and western circuit.

Yea, that's one of the bad ones. sad But it's not all like that. He does have a healthy dose of self esteem though, I'll give him that lol
