isaac hayes...

no one has ever done a better job of transforming other people's songs and making them sound like his own...
walk on by
by the time i get to phoenix
i stand accused
the look of love
you've lost that loving feeling
if loving you is wrong (i don't want to be right)

and then johnny cash runs a close second as far as making other people's songs sound like he wrote them...
rock island line
dark as a dungeon
it ain't me babe
don't think twice, it's alright
sunday morning coming down
highway patrolman

never has this been more true of johnny cash than in the 90s, now that he's has signed to american recordings...
the beast in me
bird on a wire
rusty cage
southern accents
i won't back down
one
the mercy seat
hurt
bridge over troubled water

i suppose it's because both cash and issac hayes are such master songwriters... it enables them to do more with a someone else's song that just cover it note for note... they transform them into something completely new and seperate from the original song... and a good portion of the time, you cease to associate these songs with their original artists...

Erasure--"Solsbury Hill"

Peter Murphy--"Love Me Tender"
Prince--"I Can't Make You Love Me"
George Michael--"Killer/Papa Was a Rolling Stone"

Pagey

Here is an artist who I have heard almost nothing BUT covers from...Joe Cocker. I love his versions A Little Help From my Friends, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, The Letter, and more. I fuckin love this guys voice. Also props to John Belushi for doing a DEAD ON impersonastion of Joe Cocker on SNL back in the day!

I really like Oasis' version of I Am the Walrus (I'm on a Beatles kick at the moment, what can I say).

Annie Lennox's Medusa CD...I know some people dump on it, but I really like A Whiter Shade of Pale, Don't Let it Bring You Down, and the Paul Simon song she covers.

I also think Prince's cover version's are really underrated. His versions of I Can't Make U Love Me, One of Us, La La La Means I Love U, and all the covers he did at the ONA shows are very good.

My all time fave cover tho...Jimi's version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".

peace
