Who will get inducted into R&R hall of fame on their first nomination?

I was thinking with all the uproar about the class of 2016 – who do you think will breeze through and get into the prestigious Rock & Roll hall of fame in their first year of eligibility (or close enough)

My picks are

  1. Beyonce
  2. Jay Z
  3. Coldplay
  4. Kanye West
  5. Adele (she’s more credible than Whitney & Mariah to many in the industry)

Possibly:

  1. Lauryn Hill (solo debut)
  2. Justin Timberlake

I don’t necessarily think all these artists are worthy - but they are rated in the industry

Foo Fighters

Besides Lauryn Hill, none of these artists deserve to be in the RHOF. Its hard to say though. Beyonce and Jay Z are token blacks and have had their succes handed to them due to tokenism compared to the true elite and legends of the past who really had to work hard to earn their success. I think if it any of these acts were to get in off of first eligibility it is primarily because of who they are and not necessarily because of their impact on the scope of music overall. I do think Lauryn Hill has a stronger argument for being nominated. The Miseducation is a bonified classic and was musically groundbreaking. It is still highly influential till this day. She did some classic work with the fugees too.

I wonder why people and the media always make a big deal about the Rock Hall, but ignore other ones like these. Without blues, there would be no rock. So there'd be no Rolling Stone magazine, and Jann Wenner couldn't have started his museum

there was an uproar about the Class of 2016? As most of us watched the polling-process we began to suspect that Chaka & Janet did not stand a chance....The Good'OL boys know who they're gonna let in the club before they finish off their moonshine.....They throw Big-Name Female Artists in the pot just to say a token-Woman was considered....Once you accept the inevitable you move on...

RHOF are very similiar to the Oscars when it comes to nominations and who gets in. Their very very political, picky and typical "good boys network" when it comes to their choices. I HIGHLY doubt any of these acts would get in off of first nomination.

I honestly don't see them nominating and inducting Beyonce BEFORE Janet, Whitney, Diana Ross, Tina Turner or even Mariah. I don't think they take her "seriously", I think she is just a token. There are legendary artists that have been snubbed for YEARS before they got inducted. There are even rock bands, old school Motown acts, R&B bands, etc who have yet to be inducted. I don't particularly take them that serious though especially after they inducted Green Day in over some more legendary acts.

I completely agree with this. I'm not saying some of these folks aren't talented, because they are (with the exception of Kanye), but I don't think they should be in the RRHOF. I also think the RRHOF should close down. They have lost their relevance and no one really cares anymore.

I forgot to include Amy Winehouse who has a really good shot of getting inducted in the first nomination. She lived the rock & roll life and is hugely influential and iconic.

I don't think any on the list should be. But maybe my standards are to high. There are soooo many award shows and categories these days I'm not an actor or musician and I feel like I should be eligible for something.

SMH at the people saying Kanye isn't talented and that Jay Z had his success handed to him. Kanye was a game changer for the game back in the mid 2000s and opened the doors for rappers who didn't fit the "gangsta" image at the time to have a place in mainstream hip hop. He's an ass and hasn't dropped a good album in years but his first 3 albums are classics, his 4th influential and his 5th an artistic production statement.

Jay had to grind hard to get to where he is now. He wasn't influential but he certainly didn't have his success and fame handed to him on a silver platter. Dude dropped one of the best albums of the 90's in "Reasonable Doubt", a hip hop classic and had many subsequent quality releases which solidified his place in hip hop. Jay's music now is embarrassing and he would be better off never touching a mic again but his legacy is set in stone. I'm not even a fan but to say he doesn't fit the bill for the Hall of Fame when he is one of the biggest names in hip hop is ridiculous.

The other artists in the OP besides Lauryn Hill either haveno business being inducted or can just wait their turn. Either way I don't care who gets inducted, the Rock Hall of Fame is nothing more than politics and favoritism that has lost all significance a long time ago.

I find The Blueprint by Jay Z one of the finest hip hop records of all time. I don't see why Jay Z is hated in this forum, he's a very, very intelligent lyricist.

I am sorry but I will be that one to burst someones bubble but Jay Z is the most overrated rapper of all time and it would be naive to currently think he is not a "token black" and has not benefited from tokenism when he most certainly has. Reasonable Doubt is grossly overrated. Please name an album that touches the remarkable and legendary Nas Illmatic. That album alone pretty much shits on anything Jay Z has came out with same with Tupac 7 Day theory too. I will wait for someone to come in here and skool me Jay Z who is nothing more than a gimmick rapper who has largely benefited from being a token. Please someone explain to me how his music has impacted Hip Hop? If Tupac or Biggie were still here, he would be an after thought.

Jay Z didn't work hard. He has screwed over so many black people to get to where he is and has made a career off of exploiting black culture and boonfoonery things we DON'Tneed in our community. I really have NO respect for that man at all. This is the same man that did not have a damn thing to say on Fergusion or when when a young black man was racially profiled by one of his investors company's and he did not have nothing to say. He talks about dumb ish in his music and yall really think this man deserves to be in the RHOF? PLEASE. If anybody deserve to get in off of first eligibility it would definitly be Nas, Tupac or Biggie, hell even KRS one or Public Enemy.

The only one from the OP that has any chance of getting in first year of eligibility, is Coldplay. And I'm not 100% about them.

Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters will get in first year. I think those might be the last ones in rock history that are considered a lock. Black Keys are total suckup teacher's pets pitching for the industry, but they've got another ten years or so to keep them noses brown. Maybe they will fall apart first.

But considering Janet Jackson has been eligible for induction over a decade, nominated only once and failed to get in, I don't think any of those others are guaranteed.

He's highly overrated but the most overrated rapper of all time? No, that title belongs to Eminem.

Comparing anything in Jay's discography to Illmatic is unfair considering that's one of the hip hop albums to listen to.

Also in your later post you said that Jay ruined many careers on his way up (he did) but that is almost the opposite of him having his career handed to him. He used to be a drug dealer for God's sake, no way was everything laid out for him from the start and it's silly to think that. Jay may be a token black man now but he is the definition of somebody who has started from the absolute bottom and is now one of the most well known rappers to ever be in the game as well as a multi-millionaire businessman. I don't like him or what he seems to stand for but I respect his hustle even if many of the things he did in the process held others down.

Jay at least has that advantage over his wife who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and most certainly had her career handed to her.

I have to respectfully disagree. He is way more overrated than Eminem. Eminem is not held as the greatest rapper ever like Jay Z. Jay Z is always listed in a top 10 by Rolling Stones and critics. Eminem is no where mentioned and although I do find Eminem overrated to a lesser degree, he without a doubt has a stronger disography and I find him to be a more talented songwriter and overall artist.

I can't respect someone who screwed over other people to make it to the top because screwing over others has nothing to do with music or talent. I also think he has benefited greatly from the deaths of Biggie and Tupac because I honestly don't think he would have been as successful. Maybe I was getting a head of myself when I suggested he has had a silver spoon in his mouth but he is definitly the most overrated rapper of all time and he is currently a token black.

Also in your later post you said that Jay ruined many careers on his way up (he did) but that is almost the opposite of him having his career handed to him. I'd definitely say Em is more overrated than Jay; particularly by fans and casual music listeners who know little to nothing about hip hop who consistently refer to him as nothing less than the greatest rapper in hip hop history. Em is one of the best of all time and he was definitely #1 in the game at one point but his music now is no different from what it was in the 2002. From a technical vocal aspect, Em can spit better than he ever could but his material is old and quite frankly embarrassing considering he's a 43 year old man with a daughter. Outside of his vocal rapping ability, Em is still stuck in the early 2000's and has displayed little to no growth as an artist. Despite this, he's still a top selling rapper and people sing his praises whereas even most Jay fans will admit his time has passed musically.

Biggie's death definitely helped in elevating Jay but overrated or not, Reasonable Doubt is still considered an essential hip hop album and a landmark debut. Jay wasn't a groundbreaking artist but his name value and talent before he became a success story who acts like he's still slingin' is undisputable. If Jay ruining stepping on people on his way up is why he shouldn't be inducted into the hall then you may as well revoke a good amount of those acts who have already been inducted. I'm know many of them weren't angels either.

I am not really disagreeing with you that Em is overrated. However, I am really bewildered with why you think he is more overrated than Jay Z when Jay Z recieves far more accolades, awards and adulation from critics than Eminem.....this is just a fact. I can bring receipts to prove this but I honestly think this goes without saying. Jay Z is way more revered and acclaimed than Eminem so your argument that Eminem is more overrated is unfounded. If that is your opinion I can respect that but its not based on any receipts.

I was not comparing Em' music of today. I was looking at his disography as a whole and his talent which is far eclipses Jay Z.

Looking at both Jay Z and Eminem objectively talent and disography wise, IMO, Eminem is far more talented and artistic than Jay Z. For one, he is a stronger songwriter and lyrist. He also has more creative story plots and is a more talented free styler. Songs like Stan, The Way I Am, Lose Yourself are far more lyrically complex than songs like Big Pimpin, Girls Girls Girls, HOV, etc and these are some of Jay Z's more popular songs back during his peak. Its just really no comparision. Jay is a very mediocre MC with an average disography. I still think Reasonable Doubt is overrated and is not as compelling and influential compared to those other 90s albums i.e. The Chronic, Illmatic, 7 Day theory. You keep saying Reasonable Doubt is reverred but its not really hailed as that influential compared to those other albums.

He does not deserve to be in the RHOF. Rappers like Nas, Dr. Dre (he is already in), Tupac deserve to get in. They have had a more stronger impact on Hip Hop music and culture.
