The Moonwalk On MTV Before MJ. I never knew they had a video for this classic heads tune. This dude Poppin Pete Solomon does the moonwalk in this video....2 years before MJ did. the song of course just wasn't as big as Billy Jean. [Edited 2/24/16 15:29pm] Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

That dance was called "The Glide" originally. MJ took it and made it into his own & renamed it the Moonwalk. After having that very street dancer in that video teach him it. Also Jeffery Daniels. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I've seen that move in old footage as far back as the 1950s by Bill Bailey but I don't know what they called it back then or if it had a name at all. When that move somehow became a part of street dance sometime in the 1970s it was referred to as a "backslide" or "The Backslide". The first time I can remember seeing it was arby Jeffrey Daniel (No "s") around 1980 on Soul Train during a Shalamar performance but I now know it was done by Jeffrey and his group in '79 and the Electric Boogaloos in 1980. Never heard of "The Glide" but "Gliding", however, is an entirely different move typically done in a circular motion but sometimes done moving forward or with side movements (ex. Boogaloo Shrimp during the broom dance in "Breakin'"). Shrimp actually does both the backslide and gliding in that scene but immediately breaks out in to a side glide just as the beat drops. He then goes right into a "backslide"...
Sorry folks but work computer is not letting me post the videos or the links ..."think from a positive place, and eliminate the negative fate"...

I thought the moonwalk was a dance from the 1960s. My mom had this record. The steps are mentioned at 1:50 You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Top of the Pops - A night to remember Shalamar, Jeffrey is doing all sorts of dances there including the mime shuffle. This thing is just mindblowing. . And at 1.59 he does the moonwalk. This was June 1982, a full 11 months before MJ did it on Motown 25. . Apparently it was invented by the Poppers around 1979. (They were on Soul train in 1979) [Edited 4/6/16 4:39am] Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Just wanted to say that Michael never said that he invented the "Moonwalk". He ALWAYS gave others credit for this dance. However, it was Michael who made the moonwalk a popular phenomenon around the world.
