I'm having a hard time finding the original Bonita Applebum on youtube. Can someone help me find it? All I can find is the remix!




I had no trouble finding the original. There were quite a few including the original video. I had trouble finding the Hootie mix with the rap. They only had
the instrumental. The Hootie mix sampled the Isleys Between The Sheets long before Biggie touched it. On the Hootie remix QTip switches up the rhyme from the album version. My cousin had the single version on cassette with the Hootie mix and that's what made me more of a Tribe fan than I already was.

Phife was the people's MC. He rhymed about his real life and real problems with confidence and humor. He could have easily been overshadowed by Q-Tip after People's, but with his very first verse on Low End Theory, he proved that he was a legendary MC and ATCQ's all-time greatness. He will be missed dearly.

I'm so glad this was made before Phife's untimely death. The next Wax Poetics is a TRIBE issue with new interviews from everyone, even Phife, because they were promoting the new reissue of their debut album.

Since we began this music magazine in 2001, we've wanted to do a cover story on A Tribe Called Quest. The group influenced so many people, including us. From our days of digging for dollar records in New York, scoring a copy of Ronnie Foster's 'Mystic Brew' at the Union Square record show (post-Roosevelt), studying how Tribe and Premier made beats—it all led to forming this magazine.


But since Tribe broke up, they were notoriously hard to corner, and often refused to speak together as a group about the old days. About six months ago, thanks to their publicist, Carleen Donovan, and writer Chris Williams, we were able to secure interviews with all four original members—Tip, Phife, Ali, and Jarobi—to talk about their debut album. Tragically, and surreally, the evening the story was turned in was the same night that we heard Phife had passed away from complications with diabetes.



In what is ultimately their final interview together, A Tribe Called Quest returned to their roots. Next issue, Summer #65, Wax Poetics returns to our roots and is proud to feature Tribe on the cover, where they belong.
