the legendary Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest has passed away at the young age of 45. Chuck Chillout posted the Tweet just after 1 a.m. EST Wednesday morning [March 23]. The Five-Foot Assassin has been battling his health for years, consistently fighting Type-I diabetes, which he developed in 1990. The news of his death was also confirmed by Statik Selektah, and many veteran Hip Hop artists, including Aesop Rock, Chuck D and El-P, who have taken to social media to express their condolences, as well. Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

I just got wind of it from Michael Smith and Jamele Hill on the Mike & Mike show on ESPN. I have all of Tribe stuff. Was just listening to The Love Movement and Midnight Maurauders a couple weeks ago. Gonna miss Phife. Tribe was even talking about doing some new stuff. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Aww not Phife. Loved him frm day 1. He's been on periscope quite a lot lately. Just last wk he was scoping frm NY with his Mom & in the studio with Jarobi. Occasionally he's on there babysitting his two nieces, Uncle Malik's too cute. New album was due this summer. Very, very sad news. RIP Phife - what a loss. Too bad I can't find a clip of Dave Hollister's "Baby Do Those Things" remix with Phife and that great throwback beat. He will be missed. Glad I got to see ATCQ reunite on Jimmy Fallon a few months ago.

Phife suffered from complications associated with KIDNEY FAILURE. Phife had a very public struggle with diabetes, which often left him drained of energy and unable to perform for long periods of time. He got a kidney transplant in 2008 to help treat his sickness. He was first diagnosed back around May of 1990.
Taylor was upbeat about his future in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine last November:
R.I.P.Malik Issac Taylor[img:$uid]http://i66.tinypic.com/29bdnit.jpg[/img:$uid] [Edited 3/23/16 10:47am] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

RIP Phife aka Malik The 5 Ft. Freak aka Dyno-mutt (yes, I saw him on stage). Sorry but, as a Day 1 Tribe fan, I'll be quoting his lines all day long and, probably, for the rest of the week.

I saw him in concert for his lone solo album. He could definitely hold his own.

I have colleagues from work who are from all over the world. I introduced them to A Tribe Called Quest since the news of Phife's death hit. They liked it. Then we had a discussion about how rap music has changed/devolved into the current trend of "trap music". They were horrified by some of the trap music songs that are popular (and many of these are YOUNG folks too)....so it's interesting to see people appreciate older hip-hop compared to today's trap music....
