I think critics are worried about sounding irrelevant to pop themselves, or having a disrespectful review of an album that will become popular. It's always funny to read old reviews for now-classic albums that were panned before release.

That's pretty sad. A critic's job is to state their honest opinions and it sucks that out of fear of not looking "cool" they have to suck up to anything they probably hate. I just find it hard to believe that the vast majority of critic's truly think that some of the things they revere are worthy of their opinion. At thr end of the day, it's still an opinion and people are allowed to have their's but in my opinion, too much of it comes off as contrived pandering.

I absolutely agree. That's why I respected Siskel & Ebert, because at least they were honest, even in opposition to one another's opinion.

Indeed. I'm not familiar with Siskel and Ebert but we need more critics with integrity.

When critics highly rate nearly everything they listen to then that's just an example of lowering the bar. I won't say it is the reason but I think it's a reason why mainstream music is so weak.

These critics' pandering is partly why we have a flavorless bubblegum pop album like 1989 winning a Grammy for Album of the Year and a host of other run of the mill pop acts dominating the mainstream music scene and being heralded as something more than what they are. The Weeknd's latest work is a generic pop album with light shades of MJ in terms of sound yet is getting held high as some sort of masterpiece like it's a modern day Off the Wall.

If anything, critics gushing over certain artists, albums and songs like they do really show how manufactured the mainstream music scene is now more than ever.

Siskel & Ebert were movie critics who used to have a TV show. They were known for giving a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" to a movie.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I love me some Siskel and Ebert. Those guys were the best. Lots of their movie reviews are on YouTube.

That song is horrible. I hated it in 1985 and probably hate it even more now
