the last waltz

i've been listening to the band's last waltz 4 cd set a lot recently. what a great set. i had seen the movie sometime in the late seventies. recently, they played it on some cable channel, and so i had to go out and get the discs, just a great rock and roll record.

great guest stars:
bob dylan
van morrison
joni mitchell
eric clapton
dr. john
muddy waters
neil young
emily lou harris
the staples
and even -gasp- neil diamond

As I said on the "What we are listening to" thread...you've got good taste. I discovered the Band by listening to The Last Waltz back in the 80's and have been a fan ever since. The 4 disc set is amazing, but its still missing a few tracks from the actual concert.

Get the DVD...the commentaries are great and the extras are pretty cool too.

I have this renewed dvd and still have yet to pick up the renewed audio box set with the complete performances..but neverhteless worship
There's something about the holiday vibe on there (Thanksgiving dinner and then a show to beat all shows after) on this that is perfect.

thank you

unfortunately, i don't have a dvd player. i thought that perhaps my computer would play dvds, but alas, it won't. i bought an fz dvd to check it out, but it won't play. i'm sure that i can download a player of some sort, but i'm too lazy at this point.

i was able to record it on vhs when it was broadcast recently, so i do have a video document. martin scorcese is so young looking, it's wild.

Pushin this thread back to the top. The Last Waltz needs to be on the 1st page a bit longer.

Buy a DVD player for this one alone. It is completely worth it. There are actually 2 commentaries, 1 with Marty & Robbie Robertson and another with Levon Helms, Mavis Staples, and others. The 2nd one is funny as hell. Levon sure hates Robbie.

Levon claims that Robbie took sole songwriting credits (thus publishing royalties) for many songs that everyone in the Band contributed to, especially songs on The Brown Album (which is arguably the most popular).

He also is mad that Robbie pulled the plug on The Band with out really consulting anyone. Robbie came up with the Last Waltz on his own because he was sick of touring. The rest of the members didn't want it to end at that point. Levon has some valid points for being pissed.
