Kendrick Lamar shocked th...erformance at the 58th Grammy Awards. The Compton-raised rapper took viewers on a journey which detailed the issues of how racism continues to effect Black lives.

Lamar entered the stage c... other men before rapping the opening verse of “The Blacker the Berry.” He transitioned to “Alright” by breaking from the chains and being surrounded by African dances and drummers. His last song was an untitled tribute to Trayvon Martin and the performance eventually ended with the word “Compton” inside a map of Africa.

But while the performance provided a much needed message, it may not have been an original idea. According to Leigh Ann Hann, Artistic Programmer for La Grand Performance in Los Angeles, the concept was originally performed by rapper Dice Raw.

Dice Raw, a former member of The Roots, initially performed a similar work with the play, “The Last Jimmy,” in front of a crowd of 3,000 at La Gran d in 2015.

I have never heard of Dice Raw so I guess Kendrick raised his profile a bit. Win-win.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Dice Raw is amazing. IMO, a better emcee than Kendrick. His 2000 album release, "Reclaiming The Dead" is absolute fire.

"Brain Softener" is the JAM.

Yes, it's one of my favorites of his....It's a song talking about how despite the horrible, calculated and terrible things that are aimed at oppressed people, we are going to be "Alright" and survive it. The video is good too. I'm just disappointed that in his Grammy performance that he didn't say that part of the verse "and we hate po-po, wanna kill us dead in the street for sho'".....I guess he's officially a "mainstream" revolutionary now.

I don't think it was blacked/bleeped out....he changed the entire verse when it got to that part of the song.

When I watched the show, there was part of his performance where the sound went dead...and it sure seemed like a "bleeped out" part to me...

I have listened to Alright DOZENS of times. I'm telling you, the part about "hating po po" was not bleeped Kendrick changed the lyrics. The parts of the song that were bleeped out was an entirely different part of the song. Trust me, I have listened to that song enough times smile

Yeah there's a lot of slang and black American dialect but what I wrote above in a few earlier posts is essentially what the song is about.

Yeah I think the song is one of Kendrick's best. Also great production by Pharrell too.
